Hey, hey, hey, hey
(There'll be food on the table tonight)
Hey, hey, hey
(There'll be pay in your pocket tonight)
My gut is wrenched out, it is crunched up and broken
My life that is lived is no more than a token
Who'll strike the flint upon the stone and tell me why?
If I yell out at night there's a reply of blue silence
The screen is no comfort, I can't speak my sentence
They blew the lights at heaven's gate and I don't know why
But if I work all day on the blue sky mine
(There'll be food on the table tonight)
Still I walk up and down on the blue sky mine
(There'll be pay in your pocket tonight)
The candy store paupers lie to the shareholders
They're crossing their fingers, they pay the truth makers
The balance sheet is breaking up the sky
So I'm caught at the junction, still waiting for medicine
The sweat of my brow keeps on feeding the engine
Hope the crumbs in my pocket can keep me for another night
And if the blue sky mining company won't come to my rescue
If the sugar refining company won't save me
Who's gonna save me?
Who's gonna save me?
Who's gonna save me?
But if I work all day on the blue sky mine
(There'll be food on the table tonight)
And if walk up and down on the blue sky mine
(There'll be pay in your pocket tonight)
And some have sailed from a distant shore
(And the company takes what the company wants)
And nothing's as precious as a hole in the ground
Who's gonna save me?
Who's gonna save me?
I pray that sense and reason brings us in
Who's gonna save me?
Who's gonna save me?
We got nothing to fear
In the end the rain comes down
In the end the rain comes down
Washes clean the streets of the blue sky town
(There'll be food on the table tonight)

Gosh darn, goose bumps every time i hear this - it throws me so far back :D
Eternal props to my bassist friend Bones Hillman aka Wayne Stevens. I was honored to be his roadie briefly in the DC area. Your 95 pound Ampeg SVT tube amp tested my limits ;-}
RIP brother. You are missed.
RIP brother. You are missed.
Great guitar riffs, socially aware lyrics, great that they have reunited.
It's October 4th, 2022. The day after 'the gig of all gigs'. No more Oils live. No more screaming along with this and many other gems.
Except now, with the radio...

Ticket to the Sydney gig in my pocket, when I hear this. Can't wait for April to come around and see the Oils live again.

I was going to correct you, to say it was about Uranium mining.
And then I checked, and I was wrong, and you are correct.
So, yah. Well done.

If by disgrace you mean dedicating your life to honorable political ideals through activism and art than, I guess he's king of the disgraces. I'm certainly no expert on Australian politics but it appears that as a politician he's tried to remain true to his ideals, while balancing the economic needs of citizens and corporations with attempts at environmentally sound practices. It's all well-and-good to say you're against Uranium mining because of the environmental costs, but than you have to face the people who's livelihoods depend on the weight of your decisions. I give him credit for walking the walk his entire life, even if it means adapting to new political realities and alienating some old supporters.
I’m surprised you could even interpret the comment you responded to. That’s pretty impressive.

You do realize that I now must go and listen to the whole album?
This means I'm gonna miss the 12 next songs here!
What an awful dilemma...

They sound as awful live as they do canned.
Parliamentarian Peter Garrett
Great band. Not one of their best songs.
I thank RP immensely for introducing me to this and other Aussie bands (such as Boy & Bear), so that my musical knowledge of Oz isn't restricted to the cliched Men at Work. I don't know if yer man sold out after Midnight Oil or not, but for sure the band wears its political heart on its sleeve, and consciousness-raising is half of the work of political and social change. I'll bet they got some hostile receptions in Oz, so kudos to them for keeping going.
wow ! they are fantastic live !
Much prefer them live. I don't like his studio voice.
I hadn't heard this version. Cool.

Outstanding quality and lyrics, have always enjoyed this group's artistry, but especially that this is live. Thanks a lot, Radio Paradise, keep it up.
First time hearing his version, love it, does anyone out there have any advice on buying tracks or cd from the provided links? bought a couple the quality of the mp3s leavees me wanting, is that just the way it is with mp3 downloads ?
Thanks Bill,

I can't believe rp is playing MO again, politically speaking garret latched on to these talented musos through his political alignment and left them in the same manner PG is a political and misical disgrace.

I saw MO once during the big arena days post-beds-are-burning. They stopped the show two songs in and Peter went to the edge of the stage to talk to a young girl who was there with her dad. By young, I mean six years old. Peter asked her if she had earplugs in, and he told her how precious her hearing was and had a roadie run some earplugs out for her. I was a fan before that, and have been one ever since.
I'd never heard them acoustic before - that lead singer drives me bugf*ck, but the band as a whole is solid. And I like the passion and power in the music and lyrics. They care about what they sing and play about, and that's a big deal. Upon listening to this one, I think I like them better acoustic. More earthy. Except, lose the harmonica. Geez - my worst nightmare is Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen all onstage, playing harmonicas to "Jokerman." Guh...
I saw the Oils many, many times through the 1980s on the Sydney pub circuit, they were always great live, Peter Garret was always so energetic on stage. Pity as our environment minister he does not have some of that old energy he had on stage. I still love their music.

I'd say they had a pretty good career. Its just our loss that they're no longer around as the 'Oils.
sniff! I miss the Oils. Saw them live 3 times, including once in a tiny drunken pub in Sydney's western suburbs. Those guys put on some amazing shows.

Sing it Sistah!!
One of the best bands in the whole world. I think they are better than U2, but coming from Australia does not help your career prospects. And now they are no more.

Sounds good. The description "live acoustic" is incorrect, though. "Live" yes. But not "acoustic". The acoustic guitar is in the original.
Then again, I think the "acoustic" description for many live performances is mistaken. The PA system is powered. The recording equipment is powered. Does it really just mean acoustic guitars instead of electric guitars?
I clearly hear an acoustic guitar in this recording and an audience applauding....

The perfect opening song for their act. Saw them do it electric in a 1000 person venue. Blown away.
Good song, but the original has much more fervor. 7
