I know a girl in a new blue dress
Ready to meet a stranger with good intentions
She's so tender with no corners at all
She is one of nature's unique inventions
I know a girl waving goodbye
I love a girl in motion
Someday's the job I get tied up in knots
I come home drunk and angry, so demanding
She lay me down and squeeze it out
Rub my head while I cry, so understanding
Understanding
I know a girl with a tear in her eye
I know a girl with a notion
I know a girl waving goodbye
I love a girl in motion
Guess it got to be too much taking care of me
Guess it got to be too much, I guess it gotta be
I know a girl with a suitcase packed
I love a girl with a train ticket, takin her away from me
Takin her away
I know a girl with a tear in her eye
I know a girl with a notion
I know a girl waving goodbye
I love a girl in motion

Nobody squeaks the harmonics like Nils!
I've loved Nils since the mid 70s, such a beautiful musician
Nils..in short a legend.
Originally released in 1976 (?) on the Cry Tough album.
I bought the album looking for rip-roaring Lofgren rock tunes. They're a few on the album, but this song is the one that kept the LP on my turntable for weeks.
Tender use of an electric guitar, with lots of sad, ethereal harmonic overtones.

bought the album Nils and discovered it wasn't his best but it was good enough to keep listening. liked his work with Crazy Horse - still enjoy hearing his distinctive voice

Nils Lofgren has been around playing and recording music longer than Willy DeVille has, not that it matters. Anyhow, I wish that tired "so-and-so called" trope would quietly go away; maybe they could make a vaccine and eradicate it like polio.
I'd definitely get a "tropes" vaccine, but we'd need a new booster every few months!

Bruce is just the latest of many associations. He goes back to Neil Young before Crazy Horse came along and was part of the original Crazy Horse which came after his first real band Grin.
A wealth of tasty solo material along the way. Like someone else already mentioned, he compliments everyone he plays with and adds something special to everything and everyone he plays with.
Already late to the union hall ...
This song doesn't actually do much for me, but I'll give it 9.. the world needs to know! (that there's so much more to Nils than being Bruce's sidekick)

Somehow, even after more than 10, 15? years as a listener, this is the first time I've heard this. Pretty amazing. Another musician to look out for. I knew who he was, but had not made it a point to listen. Where else would I hear this?
I can hear .38 Special's "Heart Needs A Second Chance" bubbling under.

Such a distinctive and fantastic guitar sound!
Used to watch him play free shows at Reno Park in NW DC. (70's)
Would do a flip while playing and never miss a beat.

I met Nils once years ago playing a small bar in Iowa City. Bought him a beer and had a great talk with him. Super good guy. Can play the shit out the guitar.
My kind of jam.
jumped from 8 to 9
Really not the best song from NL, but I am pleased to hear his voice. And his guitar!
Nobody else quite like Nils...so good!
This is a lovely tune.
One of the best live acts you can see. He is a great guitarist and so very down to earth
He is one of the many musicians that isn't flashy, doesn't stand out, but is so excellent and compliments whoever he is playing with.
One of the best.
This is exquisite.

Willie DeVille called. He wants his "sound" back.

Captivating.

Tscha yaknowhat? There's enough brilliance to go round. Both are excellent. No competition. No need to denigrate. Sorry your ear is tuned so they aren't distinct. There's a rhythmic thing goin on here that's DeVillesque ......... but gawd. Both are great! And unique. Nils rocks!

Nils! That voice! Got me in the original Tower Records in 1976 with Cry Tough. Gorgeous. Thanks RP!!!
I know a girl with a notion in her head when she cries.

I've been a fan for a long time but never got to see him. I was all set to a while ago but Springsteen called up the band and his solo gigs were all off. I hope he makes it over this way, but if not I'll have to wait until it's safe to move back to the the US.

Interesting thing about your comment on no need to be a great singer in pop or rock. That's true, but to be a great rock singer,,, well, you can count them on one hand. Way harder than any other instrument in that genre...
For being considered a 'guitarist' he has a voice that is easy on the ear. I would not say he is a great singer (because that is not a requirement in pop or rock music anyway) but he does not have any vocal affectations that grate - just a nice easy listening voice.

Love his unique sound of guitar playing. This song is "only" Pretty Good, but when the guitar solo gets started, it quickly becomes Pretty Good or even Quite Likeable.
Go Baltimore!
Perhaps the lyrics are a bit unsophisticated, but the combination of the technique and the emotion make Nils one of the very best. And, what a show he puts on.

reference to "Queen - These Are The Days Of Our Lives" ? :)

Funny you should say that. The one gig of his I went to back in 1985, I could swear he went to pick up a guitar by its neck and just by holding it that way he was playing it (i.e. just the left hand on the neck) as he carried it to center-stage.
This song doesn't actually do much for me, but I'll give it 9.. the world needs to know! (that there's so much more to Nils than being Bruce's sidekick)
Has he been holding a guitar since he was 2 just like Derek Trucks?
Awesome.

I really love his thin yet soulful voice....he's been great for years...can I get a Grin?? Springsteen realized what valuable player he is....thanks Nils!!!
