you know the way that things go
when what you fight for starts to fall
and in that fuzzy picture
he writing stands out on the wall
so clearly on the wall
send out the signals deep and loud
and in this place, can you reassure me
with a touch, a smile - while the cradle's burning
all the while the world is turning to noise
oh the more that it's surrounding us
the more that it destroys
turn up the signal
wipe out the noise
send out the signals deep and loud
man i'm losing sound and sight
of all those who can tell me wrong from right
when all things beautiful and bright
sink in the night
yet there's still something in my heart
that can find a way
to make a start
to turn up the signal
wipe out the noise
wipe out the noise
wipe out the noise
you know that's it
you know that's it

"cinematic" Hmm... Maybe that has something to do with why I love this song so much.
Outstanding.
This "cinematic" notion is not fetched from so far away... I Remember having bought the album and watching "Gangs of New York" some time later. (click here)
Scorsese used this song for the brutal street fighting scene and the effect is overwhelming. A timeless masterpiece was now accompanied by hypnotic pictures. Can't tell how I adore both artists.
I'm going now to request it 'cause I saw it was last played more than four years ago. Why?

I can't seem to get tired of this CD, especially this song. It's got a depth and cinematic quality to it that most modern music lacks.

Noise, yuck.
I received the new Peter Gabriel CD on Friday, and while unloading my rental truck, had it in the CD Player.. people who are shocked by THIS tune should listen to the FIRST track... WOW.. I had the cdplayer up a little because it starts quiet.. but boy.. after the first 15 or 20 seconds.. it kicks in FULL FORCE! It kind of bothered me a little that my neighbors might question what type of person moved in next door because I'm not in an area that I'd expect to find other PG fans.. (*very* somewhat rural would best qualify my new location)
Every track you hear on UP is definative Peter Gabriel! I mean... its like you look at an apple, you *KNOW* its an apple.. you hear a Peter Gabriel Tune .. you KNOW its him!
The only regret is that again most of the material on this album seems again to beckon back to his previous darker mooded music. Very Dramatic.. very good.. but it might be better in smaller doses for some folks...
Yes, this song is growing on me like a rash. I have to switch to another radio feed (acid jazz)everytime it is played.
Love this one, its not squealing, open your mind, its a different kind of singing. This one gets better with every listen

This song grows on me as it goes on. Pulls you in. Interesting.
Best track on the new Up...awesome!
Wipe out the noise...please
If it wasn\'t for RP, I wouldn\'t know that Peter Gabriel had a new cd (\'UP\'). I just bought it after getting hooked by RP.
THANKS! I say play as much Gabriel as you want!
I beleive its just right...and there is never enough Gabriel
Play some Lamb Lies Down...Perhaps Carpet Crwlers or the hilarious Counting Out Time. Peter is a genius and, well, nuff said. I have to add, he has made some missteps, not everything he does is brilliant, but, if you Gabriel haters actuially sat down and listened to his albums from begining to end, perhaps add in some Gabe Genesis, you may not love him yet, but could at least appreciate him. I can appreciate just about any music, I won\'t just dismiss it. I don\'t like country or rap as a rule, but I can appreciate much of it and listen to some. Everyone wants something different, something besides top 40, thats why many listen to RP, if PG is not different, what do you want?
As my son once said...\"That is just not right!\"
Agree with those who said that 1) this song is crap, and 2) RP plays too much Peter Gabriel.

Well I *can* appreciate Gabriel... It has been so long since hes put out his OWN cd instead of helping others on theirs.
I\'d like to hear more from this new cd. I think I\'ll buy it on the way home this morning. (I\'m a night worker).
Thanks Bill! ... making me spend more money on music I can\'t hear anywhere else ;)
:D
Its a shame you can\'t at least appreciate this amazing song. There are songs that I hate as well, but I can always find something to appreciate in it. However, a work of art such as this song and this album at least deserves SOME praise. Listen to it closer. Give it a chance. Peters work will grow on you.

Agreed... this is utter crap
I love the orchestral strings and the percussion. Intense.
Proof that there IS still REAL music being produced today. Well done Peter ;)
Janie came home with a vengeance...
One of PG\'s least original
What happened to the signal? This track is all noise.
Slowly I\'m starting to like Peter Gabriel more and more, thanks to the exposure on RP. This song is excellent. Thanks for leading me into this.
Good to hear from Peter Gabriel again. One of my favorite experimental artists
Wow. I will buy his new album based on this song alone.
That has to be the worst thing I have ever heard on Paradise
Even my internet connection failed during it!
I am totally diggin\' this new Peter Gabriel work. Definately reminds me of his earlier solo work. Just awesome!
Oppressing, but showing light at the end of the tunnel.
Send some shivers down my spine.
Outstanding.
In spirit it reminds me of some of his early genesis work rather than the pop sound of albums such as \"so\".

I'm very curious about "Up". I'll surely listen to it at the music store.

love to hear some more nusrat fateh ali khan on r.p. and more world music for that mater.

Responding almost 10 years later... HA!
Anyway, yes, I remember noticing it in Gangs of New York as well. Not too surprising given their collaboration on Last Temptation of Christ.
