I liked Billy Corgan better when he worked at a used record store by my house in the Jefferson Park neighborhood in Chicago.  It was called Record Hunt in case anyone wants to verify that.

Rhino is one of my favorites :). My ballet/modern dance teacher growing up choreographed our entire recital to SP's Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness album. Dancers from ages 6 - 30 were rocking out on stage in front of our parents to SP - it was awesome!!!

To me, this earlier Pumpkin stuff represents some of the last creative, agressive, all up in your face rock and/or roll guitar work.

I am a listening fan of old Eddie Van Halen and Dave Navarro guitar playing.

Any comments on bands exhibiting current guitar work like that stuff?

Let me see: every song must have Pain, Angst, Anger, or Despair expressed in boring, repetitive, truncated, muted singing and playing. This is called the PAAD formula and this band followed it.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I think music is like religion - we have different needs at different times in our lives so what fits best also changes. Which makes me wonder if we are OK with a wide array of music through life, why do so many put so much effort into making religion (or spirituality if you prefer) a one-size-fits-all-for-life solution?

I seems absurd but I bought a couple of Smashing Pumpkins albums when the were released, but they did nothing for me and I shelved them.  A year ago I heard Luna from Siamese Dream on Radio Paradise and fell in love, dug out my old CD’s and started buying the back catalog. I’m now asking myself how on earth I missed them first time round?

There are two songs on this rotten apples album that have incredible feedback solos cutoff.  This song and Drown.  They are both in somewhat regular rotation here, and every time I hear one or the other I miss those solos.  

Better than nothing though!

All of the hate for SP makes me laugh. Trent Reznor does the same kind of thing (and then some) and it's ok. Many rock legends are known for being kind of crazy and obsessive, and that's fine. Billy gets all kinds of criticism though, yet the band's discography is truly one of a kind.

Some people like to say everything went downhill after Gish and Siamese Dream, but I disagree. I think the fact that they branched out and tired different things is a testament to Billy's desire to take risks instead of doing what would make more money. Remember, this is a band that at one point got sued by its label for basically not pumping out one double album after another. You may want to think again before you say he "sold out" after the first couple albums. "Selling out" is irrelevant. All bands do. Yes, even the countless "indie" bands that you nitpickers fall in love with who sell their songs to automobile makers to use in their bland commercials.

Billy likes noise. If you like noise, particularly of the loud variety, you will probably like most of the loud moments of Smashing Pumpkins (as opposed to the quiet, opiate-induced D'Arcy moments.)
