UFO from the UK did a great cover of this on their Lights Out album in 1977 I believe.  Great vocals and Michael Schenker on lead guitar makes it special.  They made it a true rocker.

As others have pointed out, you have your cover and originals mixed up.  However, I do think that your point is good - a cover should add something or change things a bit; Calexico's version is just a straight copy.

Seriously?  This IS the ORIGINAL VERSION!  It came out in 1967.  I was listening to it on WNEW FM 102.7 (NYC) before the members of Calexico were born!!!  Dont't get me wrong, I love Calexico, they are a GREAT BAND!

So happy LOVE has come onto the RP playlist. These guys were so far ahead of their time. Their playlist covers an extraordinary period in the awakening of so many to a newer reality for our time on the planet. Multiracial musicians playing in an uncommon arrangement. Forever Changing indeed.

I was in LA when Love ruled the progressive pop universe.  Superb, well ahead of their time.  Arthur Lee was a mad genius.  Calexico is a worthy successor.

Ahh when this was played at the end of "Russian Doll" I went I know this song but not this version.. after a bit of searching I found that it was on the only UFO album I have. Mind you "Try Me" is my favourite song on the album.

Recommended buying this album to more than a few friends when it first came out
by tellin' 'em I'd buy it from them if they didn't love it...I didn't have to buy a single

This album kept getting my attention on a lot of "greatest" lists, so I bought the CD a few years ago.  I appreciate 60's music, but I have to say, I just don't get it on this one—can't get into it.  Once and a while a portion will remind me of Moody Blues or Hair soundtrack, etc...but I just want to hear those instead.  Thumbs down for me.

"Bottle Rocket" was right in Owen Wilson's wheelhouse—doggedly sunny belief in a goofy, insane and unworkable premise. Not the strongest story although you could say that about a lot of Wes Anderson's movies. "Grand Budapest Hotel" was great fun but it pretty much amounted to a few chase scenes and a lot of to-ing and fro-ing. Had no idea that Ralph Fiennes could be so funny especially as I'd last seen him impersonating an autistic Weimaraner in "The Duchess."

Truly magical song - and album. Been in my top 10 since a friend introduced it to me in the 60s!
We managed to see Arthur Lee for his (final) Forever Changes tour in UK, not long before he died. An unbelievable experience, sounded almost note perfect after his many years and hardships, and with a completely new group half his age!

YES!  What a weird movie!  The Wilson Bros. funny as hell, James Caan at his seedy best, and such a wacky story!  I too was appreciative that someone had remembered the beauty and grace of this plaintive song that was all over the place back in the day and put it in a contemporary soundtrack...but I wonder how many people even know about this movie?  Glad the song's on RP for many to hear!

Excellent song from an excellent album.  They really put out some great music that had a lot of influences from Jazz and classical and Latin.  They really brought all that together and that takes a lot of talent.

There is also a 2 CD set where the 2nd CD has studio out-takes. I like some of them better than the ones used.

As much as I generally disagree with Dave, I have to agree that this song simply soars—and, yes, is nearly perfect in its execution. Back then of course we had no idea what to think of it—a chorus of horns? A lone mariachi trumpet? Then Quickilver did "Pride of Man," and within a year Tower of Power, The Electric Flag, and Chicago burst upon the scene...and it all fell into place. Arthur Lee was beyond cool.

Actually, The Bloody Mooes had their first LP "Go Now" in '64. They released their "Days of Future Past" LP in '67, same year as this song.
