Oh, baby blankets and baby shoes
Baby slippers, baby spoons, walls of baby blue
Dream child in my head is a nightmare born in a borrowed bed
Now I know lightning strikes again
It struck me once, then struck me dead
My folly grows inside of me
I eat for two, walk for two, breathe for two now
Walk for two, eat for two, breathe for two now
Well, the egg man fell down off his shelf
All the good King's men with all their help
Struggled 'til the end for a shell they couldn't mend
You know where this will lead
To hush and rock in the nursery
For the kicking one inside of me
I eat for two, walk for two, breathe for two now
Eat for two, walk for two, breathe for two now
When the boy was a boy, the girl was a girl
They found each other in a wicked world
Strong in some respects
But she couldn't stand for the way he begged and gave in
Pride is for men, young girls should run and hide instead
Risk the game by taking dares with "yes"
Eat for two, walk for two, breathe for two now
Eat for two, walk for two, breathe for two now
Walk for two? I'm stumbling
Walk for two? I'm stumbling
Breathe for two, how? I can't breathe
I can't breathe
Five months, how it grows
Five months now, I begin to show
Baby slippers, baby spoons, walls of baby blue
Dream child in my head is a nightmare born in a borrowed bed
Now I know lightning strikes again
It struck me once, then struck me dead
My folly grows inside of me

Not many Rock songs about being Pregnant.
sounds so good and strong had to get off the ladder I was upon (installing lights for an art exhibit) to check out Natalie's song, and it is quite powerful ('93 yikes this is olde : )

Really enjoyed the original studio version of this tune. This version...not so much!
Sounds like the guitarist is soloing in the wrong key. Kind of bugs me.

can't believe that i actually kinda like this... must be at least partially thanks to the fact that Natalie and 10,000 Maniacs are not played every hour on the hour here anymore.
not bad in small doses.

You should've lent her your Nick Drake collection instead. ;-)
This song just doesn't do it for me. A 2.

Great song. Years ago, a friend of mine who knew I was 10kM fan and had seen them live, wanted to borrow the CD that had the original version of this song. I asked her what she wanted it for, and she said she wanted to play it a baby shower. My jaw nearly hit the floor. She thought it was just about a girl having a baby. When I explained that it was really about someone contemplating having an abortion, she didn't believe me until I played it for her and she really listened to the lyrics. Needless to say, she didn't borrow the CD.
I don't know if I agree with that interpretation completely. While it does revolve around a woman trying to deal with the gravity of being pregnant, I don't necessarily get that she's looking to end it. There are references to dealing with the baby after birth. Either way you are right - not baby shower material.
:-k
Can't help it. One of the great , groundbreaking bands of the 80's. Always will like their arrangements. A 9. Go 10KM
the urgency of the original turns into a funeral dirge in this version...

I remember getting this disc through BMG and being underwhelmed. I never saw the Maniacs live ("plugged" or otherwise) but the power of their studio tracks is lost here. Go for the originals;lose this disc.
A agree with others. The original is better than this one. This is a strange arrangement.
Original version better than this live one, and either way, there are stronger choices from this band.
great group, but far from the best song selection.
