Sorry, the whole jam band thing comes right from jazz.  Jazz probably got it from Appalachian/Delta folk music. And so on...

"Jessica" is cool and all but it didn't birth improvisation.

What is cool about "Jessica" is Greg Allman wrote it when he was 16.

I was working at a music store in Vancouver when I met the band when they were in town. They put me on the guest (pest) list and gave me a CD. Concert was great!

I used to use the disc to demo the pro audio equipment. The recording was very live like! Sold a few 'boxes' via them. Thanks!

I was at a record store back when this album (CD) came out and they had it set up on a display table thing. The name 'Widespread Panic" really caught my eye thinking what a great name for a band.  I had never heard of them or even what kind of music it was. Then of course the title 'Ain't Life Grand'.. Even Better! something clicked in my head and I bought it 'sound un-heard'. It became and still is one of the most listened to discs in my collection. Great album and great band.

Yep, life's pretty grand.  Especially when dancin' barefoot on the grass, smilin face to the sky, as Widespread Panic boogies at big decibels — even if all that takes place in your imagination on a grey, sub-freezing afternoon with the remnants of yesterdays' snow still on the ground.  WOOOHOOO!

Not sure why, something about this song is reminding me of the vibe on the new Tom Petty album.  I guess it would be the vocals and the pacing and the mish-mash of different styles going on.

Nice post, Andy, I'd second that and repeat my thanks to RP for introducing me to so much new music (though my wallet isn't so thankful as I've spent scads on CDs as a direct result), and for making my working day bearable. What I really love about RP is the way that every day brings something new, such as this bunch. 7 from the pleased as punch Nottingham jury.

This is WSP at their peak--both in the studio and on the road. Ain't Life Grand is a great album. HOT! Just like that smokin' set of shows at the Roseland Ballroom in Portland, OR. Thems were the days.

Indeed I had never heard them on commercial radio either and then saw them live at "Farmaid" in Chicago a couple years ago and they were one of the best acts by far, great band!

Welcome aboard Bee! I've also wondered the same thing. I think they pass under the radar because most people just consider them a hippie band. In fact, they are not the hippie type at all (alot of the fans are, though). If you're looking for good Panic, check ouot Uber Cobra. It is their live accoustic collection! And listen for their cover of Neil Young's "Walk On" on the LRC (I'm trying to get it submitted).

Have to agree with you. I never saw them live but I always felt like I'd be bored at one of their concerts. I'm an older phish fan and by the time I'd gotten around to listening to W.P. I could only appreciate the song writing. It's hard to top Phish performance wise in the mid 90's. BobVaughan wrote:

Sorry ecorunner, but I saw them live many years ago and it was pure agony. They are one of two bands that I have walked out on (the other was John Spencer's Blues Explosion). This is the best Widespread Panic album aside from Space Wrangler. Great song but I think that Airplane is the best tune on the album. One of the best albums that came out of the classic mid 90's jamband scene.

Whenever I hear music in the background and think "god this is awful" and ask who it is, it always turns out to be Radiohead or Widespread Panic. This song, however, isn't sending me over the edge... not amazing, but not as deplorable as I remember them. I can see how this would be good live or on a roadtrip.

It's interesting to see how many more Southern folks like and/or relate to this song. It is one of my favorite WSP tunes. Driving Song off Spacecowboy is the one that sends me down memory lane. Someone needs to upload City of Dreams.
