love the groove and of course the solos but he totally mailed in the lyrics on this one. I love Mark Knopfler the storyteller. This is more a mantra.

I used to wonder why you guys play so much Mark Knopfler then a lightbulb turned on in my head because he is both a great guitarist and songwriter. One of the greatest talents of the last 40 years.

doesn't hold true for the Dire Straits work.

For the doubters, go look at the lyrics for "Tunnel of Love", "Telegraph Road", "Skateway". He may have tired of writing lyrics on this tune but not in the DS records.

This sounds like one of the songs that never made the cut on the Brothers In Arms album 12 years previously.

It is a bit too formulaic "paint by numbers" effort from Mark Knopfler to my ears.

This song proves Chad Cromwell is technically the best drummer Mark ever had the pleasure to work with. After Mark's fourth solo album "Our Shangri-La" they parted ways, regrettably. Nowadays i believe Chad is Neil Young's primary drummer.

Knopfler - amazingly frustrating in the post-Dire Straits era. Loved Sailing to Philadelphia...bored by just about all the rest. Just when I think he's gonna put two or three high end tunes together, he mosies along with a heaping dollop of mood pieces that put me to sleep. The, just when I am ready to write him off, he lays out some blistering guitar...but not often enough. Maybe if he found some consistent musical partners whom he respected and would listen to for feedback to improve his songwriting....oh right....that was Dire Straits....

Maybe Sonny Landreth needs another guitar in the band (see "Congo Square"), or maybe he can join Brian Ferry (see "Boys and Girls") for another album.

A Dire Straits was the first CD I got (when they were just coming on to replace vinyl). I really liked it then but never really appreciated how good they and Mark Knopfler were until I started listening to RP.

I picked up this CD years ago in a clearance bin and believe it to be one of the wisest purchases I've made musically! I love (early) Dire Straits and think Knopfler is a genius. I can even over look the Princess Bride soundtrack, he's that good! :) Thanks for playing this and some more songs from that CD wouldn't hurt either.

This is NOT a good example of Mark Knopfler's playing. Those who don't care for this, might try "Love Over Gold" or even better "Brothers in Arms". Mark can make the guitar cry and wail...and sing. I put Knopfler in a category with Clapton....

I think most of the appeal is just that. That he can get around a fretboard well and constuct some luscious melodies. And the production on every ( ? ) Knopfler release is impeccable. So basically, you've got yourself an excellent guitar player who is extremely audible. And if that does something for you like it does me sometime (you've got to be in the mood I find), then you, my friend, are a Knopfler fan. Otherwise, listen some more and like Bob Dylan you'll understand jsut what is so great about this man even if listening to his music isn't an absolute pleasure. Although he does decend into wankery on occasion (try some live releases...my god, and the audience really WANT 10 minute solos?) Still, there is sometihng worth hearing and worth appreciating here. You've just gotta search a little more.

I was actually thinking earlier on today, why don't they play Mark Knopfler more often on RP? Not my most favourite song, but still Knopfler. Would be nice to hear stuff from his newest album, The Ragpicker's Dream.

Skymunky, often my thoughts too. I find his music highly listenable and technically articulate, but the music in general never evokes the godlike feeling in me. Undeniable skill - I wouldn't argue that.
