It's been a while since I've seen your face
It's been a while since I've walked this place
I see the monkeys riding on their bikes
Racing through the impossible night

You say you're feeling like a new tree
Man, they'll cut you from limb to limb
Pick your pocket with delight
Shake it to the right
Shake it in the light

Chorus:
Oh can't you see the glitter
The glitter in their eyes
Oh can't you see the glitter
The glitter in their eyes

Genius stalking in new shoes
Have you got WTO blues
Dust of diamonds
Making you sneeze
Kids on rollers ready for
Running through the junkyards
Breezing through the halls
Racing through the malls
Walking through the walls
They'll strip your mind
Just for fun
Quoth the raven
Yum yum yum

Chorus

Children, children everywhere
Selling souls for souvenirs
They've been sold out like as not
Just for chunks of Ankgor Vat

Chorus 2x

They'll trade you up
Trade you down
Your body a commodity
Our sacred stage
Has been defaced
Replaced to grace
The marketplace
Dow is jonesing at the bit
42nd Disney Street
Ragged hearts unraveling
Look out kids
The gleam the gleam
All that glitters
Is not all that glitters
Is not all that glitters

Wonderful.
Rockalicious.
This number is fine, but didn't we just hear it a couple of days ago?
still love this!
brings back memories
Patti was so influential that nearly every fantastic artist of the 80s were huge Patti fans. I came to discover this after reading Mike Scott/Morrisey’s biographies…
She was interviewed on NPR a short while ago and I found her articulate, compassionate and very thoughtful.  She cares about this world.  She's the real deal.
I never knew at first that this is who Gilda Radner was portraying. I just thought it was funny as heck.

A pox upon you :) I can't un-hear that now - hilarious!
Das rockt..

in the middle of  baking something and thought I was hearing Beck in the background - hahaha. Got up too early and need more coffee? Great lyrics
this is the only Patti Smith song I LOVE! I like the rest and this one… yum
She has her critics, and they make sound arguments, but for me, it's how it makes me feel.  Her voice and her energy lifts me up, she is a goddess. Thanks Patti, you are the real heart of rock.

Oh wow, now thats all I hear...gluten in the rice....LOL!!
Love the gnashing guitars and punchy drumming in this one. She times her vocals just right, too. One of her better ones, I think.

I originally rated this at 8.  Then a while later changed that to 9.  Now it is a 10, what an awesome song!
Feisty punchy sensual-suggestive amongst rough nuggets of pointed sexual energy front and centre. Willing itself to you no caution not tentative just assertive ... 20
Photo could be my dad in Palestine in 1946 ...
Is that a young Payton Manning on the album cover?

Oh yessss!! Love me some gluten...Now this is all I can hear. HAHAHAHA. Love ya Patti!
An original with 10x more to say than almost anyone else around, and the haters must be living in some sort of candy bubble and think the world is all fine. Good luck with that one.

Yeah, and whoever is pounding the rice, uh, drums on this song is doing a damn good job.
I'm so ok with this song, up to the YUM YUM YUM part, then I cringe and hit PSD. But I like it up to that point. I'm not sure why the yum yum yum line makes me cringe so bad. But...  there we are.

Instead of complaining, just press "Skip" and move on.  Professional music reviewers abound thank you.  Also, are you referring to the picture in the Wikipedia column?

It's not that your opinion is unpopular, though I disagree with it fully, but surely if you choose to 'slag off' the song, you should stick to doing just that? What your opinion of her appearance is should remain just yours - don't feel you need to share.

Her books are great.
For my money Patti's work is, um, uneven, but this a darned good tune.  7 from Scugog Island.

Maybe I'm just looking too forward to the next meteor shower, but I hear "Oh can't you see the Pleiades in the middle of the night?
I'm far from a Patti Smith fan based on what LITTLE I've heard, but this song does rock.

It reminds me a bit of The Donnas. Hey RP, you should consider playing some The Donnas. Find the song  "Gold Medal" or " I Don't Wanna Know (If You Don't Want Me)"
I'd never heard of them until a couple of years ago, but if you could cross 90% rock out like this Patti Smith song or Joan Jett with 10% Bangles and GoGos you have melodic kick ass rock.

Patti Smith rocks!{#Yes}

"Monkeys on bikes." Now that is Key West.
Fantastic stuff
Not a bad Pretenders imitation
"Quoth the Raven yum yum yum"

😍
Wow, this really rocks!
Was out shopping for a birthday party so I missed this song. Came home and tried the new RP Player, which starts an hour back in time vs. the realtime playlist... so... victory!
I am on a  loan, yet gung ho too.
Anyone remember Sleeper, and Elastica? I suddenly do.

No bad thing...

Two great tunes, to which I have to add Ultravox's All Stood Still and half a dozen Stranglers tracks. Still kicks the butt, though!

Poet warrior she is. Someone clone her quick so we can have another 30 years of real Rock and Roll.
Real good stuff.

Nice find for me as I loved Horses and then trailed off...

but I would definitely marry Patti

Love Patti.  Not one of her best songs/albums.  Never heard her bring this one back live.

Not a good representation of what makes her a hall of famer.
She can still bring the angst and the noise!  That's some tasty rock and roll.
When Patti sings, there's glitter in my eyes.
Wow! Love it

How'd this song draw so many bitchy comments? Jeez dudes. Go put your RadioHead CDs back on and let the rest of us enjoy the variety.

Evoke such pretention (sic)? Are you trying to say that Patti Smith is pretentious? {#Stupid}
I'm not her biggest fan, but pretentious is one of the last words I'd use to describe her.
Wow, this song rocks! Luvin' that bass line!

I'm ready! Take me to that place, that place where Pink Floyd and Patty Smith and the Talking Heads and Joan Osborne and the Chieftains and Sting and Annie Lennox, are crap and only some, I don't know, who, what? Who is good? Who is popular? What can be acceptable? I want to be in this elite music master-class. I want to be exalted, I want to be better than the millions of others that like these banal, popular deadbeats, these dreaded "good" lyricists, these clever musical craftsmen, these no, I can't say it, good! yes, good musicians...I want to find out where these ethereal heights hide...show me where....take me away from great, make good be gone, show me ....what?
Seriously, If you think Pink Floyd can't rate a 9 on this forum, why are you here?

You are either just reaching your 11th birthday (in which case, you have somewhat of an excuse) or you have only recently brought your opinionated - and highly uninformed (no matter your smarmy "these days" comment) - perspective to the world of popular music (in which case, you don't). Perhaps you should focus your razor-sharp intellect on the world of politics next. I bet you'd make a fine US senator - change your citizenship if necessary. Heck, why not?

I bow to no one in my love for Patti, but it's a facile thing to simply say "Her old stuff is better." I think her work from 1996 on (when she made her most recent, sustained comeback) has a maturity that brings a new depth to her work and some of those older albums probably aren't as good as you remember. But if you are going to buy a recent one, get "Trampin'" from 2004. As good as anything she's done, in my opinion.
Well said, and I completely agree. I love Radio Ethiopia in way that can only be explained by the circumstances under which I first heard it; I think it's her best but I doubt I'll find anyone who'd agree...On the other hand, Horses is, was, and always will be great. Dream of Life, Gung Ho, and Trampin' are all excellent and, well, now I'm back to what suddenchad said at the top!

I hate to participate in the "reminds me of" and "sounds like" comments, however this song is sooo reminiscent of Lene Lovich somehow...in a good way - I like :)
Just to throw in my two cent's worth--her new CD, "Trampin" is excellent--the best thing she's done in years. Still good live, saw here a few years ago. Of course, her earlier work is fantastic. Rock on...
she just played the final show at CBGB in NY, yesterday
RIP, CBGB!

Much better Patti than this album IMO--try early stuff like Horses, Radio Ethiopia, Easter, etc. Dream of Life is a later album I really dig. The rest of Gung Ho doesn't really sound much like this song if that helps...
Sounds as if she's trying to sing like Mark Knopfler, but with a higher voice, during the verse.

Patti Smith is the ultimate "rock chick," even in these later years. This song grabs you and does not let go. Not bad for a woman in her fifties!!
I saw Patti Smith at the Roskilde festival in Denmark last summer, when she had a spoken word show which was really just boring and incoherent IMHO. But she sure has made some good music. She had a 'real' concert too, but she spent half of it reading her poems. Too bad.
Great song from an AMAZING cd (Gung Ho) --best stuff she\'s done since Horses, IMO.
I have to agree with the good doctor... High energy song, one of her best IMHO.
