Thank You for the Info! PBS TV also had a documentary on the history of Rock Radio. They had a long section on WBCN. It is really worth watching & listening to in it's entirety!

R.I.P. - The last song played on the night Progressive Radio WBCN 104.1 in Boston, Massachusetts , was this classic by Floyd. This song said it all for it's 41 years on the air.

There are some pretty hallucinatory AI gen videos on the interdeath, they seem to work well with this era of Pink Floyd. I like to think the band would approve (if they were still talking to each other)

Although Dark Side of the Moon is an undeniably great album and the soundtrack for my early adolescence, I listened to this album with a bit more reverance. This was my "go to headphone"s album on a lonely night, reclined out on my bedroom roof watching the wind blow the trees back and forth.

The final songs on WBCN were Cream's "I Feel Free," the first rock song played on WBCN in 1968, and Pink Floyd's "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," followed by a much-used collage of songs with the line "They're really Rockin' in Boston..." and station bits and ID spots used over the years, which then slowed to a halt before the final words were delivered, borrowing the tagline of the late Darrell Martinie, the Cosmic Muffin: "Over and out." This reminds me of high school. Need a few more bong hits of Mexican weed. $20 a OUNCE, or a 1/4 lb. for $50!!! Awww the good old days of lousy pot. 
Roger was there, and he was sitting at the desk, and I came in and I saw this guy sitting behind him – huge, bald, fat guy. I thought, "He looks a bit... strange..." Anyway, so I sat down with Roger at the desk and we worked for about ten minutes, and this guy kept on getting up and brushing his teeth and then sitting – doing really weird things, but keeping quiet. And I said to Roger, "Who is he?" and Roger said "I don't know." And I said "Well, I assumed he was a friend of yours," and he said "No, I don't know who he is." Anyway, it took me a long time, and then suddenly I realised it was Syd, after maybe 45 minutes. He came in as we were doing the vocals for "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", which was basically about Syd. He just, for some incredible reason picked the very day that we were doing a song which was about him. And we hadn't seen him, I don't think, for two years before. That's what's so incredibly... weird about this guy. And a bit disturbing, as well, I mean, particularly when you see a guy, that you don't, you couldn't recognise him. And then, for him to pick the very day we want to start putting vocals on, which is a song about him. Very strange.

Great song. And like his contemporary Knopfler donated the guitar used to create this masterpiece (Brothers in Arms guitar sold yesterday). Bravo MK and DG for making the music even that more special (if that is even possible).

It sometimes makes me weep that someone could compose a piece of music so perfect. The mood and the phrasing on Gilmour's guitar notes are perfection. The music tells a story without any lyrics.

But the fact is, there may be nothing better than the classic era of Pink Floyd. They are musical bliss. This shit is transcendent. How did they do this? Again and again? This band has so many songs that force you to drop everything and just get lost in it for the duration. The first time, or the thousandth time.

My brother passed away a few years ago and one of his close friends wrote a beautiful eulogy, taking the tone of this song and changing up the words to personalise it.

The last song WBCN played in 2009 after thirty-nine years on the air as The Rock of Boston, before fading to static. When I went to look for a cover image to recommend Carter Allen's book on the history of the station I found a SECOND book devoted to the subject, this one by Bill Lichtenstein!

This was the golden age. When a new Floyd album was released the (formerly) cool FM station would play it first to last, and my girl and I would be lying in front of the fire with candles around and the lights off sipping wine.
Of course then one year we were hanging out with a new one that seemed off, and when the snotty nosed brats started their whining the lights came on, the radio want off, and I moved past them. (but later albums were still excellent!)

R.I.P. - The last song played on the night Progressive Radio WBCN 104.1 in Boston, Massachusetts , was this classic by Floyd. This song said it all for it's 41 years on the air.

THIS WAS ONE OF THOSE ALBUMS that I used to put on, intending to flip and hear every bit of it, hungrily soaking up the feelings that it induced. To me, this band, in all its phases, was staggeringly good at creating a powerful spell within every song within an album with a concept within a Universe of entirely Floydian co-ordinates that I can never resist diving all the way into, so that I may receive the benefits of some kind of quantum transformation, every time. I loved their unflinching willingness to be as vulnerable, as passionate, and as artistic in their music as possible, in every way, at every level. I love that I can still have all those feelings come and carry me away from the madness of the world, as always, is now, and ever shall be, thanks to Pink Floyd and Radio Paradise. Amen.
