There's a world where I can go
And tell my secrets to
In my room
In my room

In this world I lock out
All my worries and my fears
In my room
In my room

Do my dreaming and my scheming lie awake and pray
Do my crying and my sighing laugh at yesterday

Now it's dark and I'm alone
But I won't be afraid
In my room
In my room

YES! Excellent tune! It is so much better in FLAC w/ great studio phones, amp &DAC! BIG improvement! I was 8yrs old when this came out and listened to it on AM radio! In the car or my pocket transistor radio!

I just listened to the whole Eliminator track from ZZ Top. Then I switched over to RP as usual and In My Room was playing....  hey, nobodys' perfect!
Growing up, wearing out my mom's copy of Endless Summer, I used to pick up the needle and skip this one, in favor of  the more upbeat, sing-alongs like "Fun, Fun, Fun", or "Surfin' Safari", and such. These days, I see the beauty in the slower Beach Boys' tunes like this. A true classic that stands the test of time, for me at least...
best quarantine song of all times!

There is a zero on the scale. It is right after the "1" in "10", which how many listeners rated this POS (Pinnacle Of Songwriting).
I must admit I turned the setting to 'flac' and turned it up for this one. Brought a smile to my face.

Masterful sequencing. The Barenaked Ladies sing about Brian Wilson staying in his room during difficult periods in his life and then The Beach Boys sing In My Room . Bravo!

Bravo for pointing that out!  I missed that one.  Bill's funny that way, but sometimes I miss the connection.
If ever a song deserved to be a 10 it's this one.

You sir are the POS, the Beatles were listening to this and wishing they were this good!
Those who’ve called this simple or dismissed it as POS need to re-think how they listen to music. LISTEN!
ahh!

All done canning Pear Chutney! Thank you Bill for the super playlist to work to
simple but brilliant
Simply brilliant.

Captures teen angst perfectly.

Evidently, you missed Terry Gross's interview a few years ago.

Ahh, the beauty of reasoned, balanced and nuanced debate.

You should check out songs like "Feel Flows", "Funky Pretty", "Heroes And Villains", "Long Promised Road", "'Til I Die", "California Saga/California" or "Cabinessence".
You'd be surprised...  they just did a small time frame of surf music.

Absolutely!  As odd as Brian Wilson is he wrote some absolutely beautiful music.  I just wish this song lasted at least a minute longer.

Interesting how people who make moronic comments are often unable to spell even the simplest of words.

Did not know this. Thanks, Kurt—will check out some of those songs.

I think the Beach Boys' image of squeaky-clean guys may have interfered with wider recognition of their adventurous works. The Beatles could go off in different musical directions without alienating their fans. I don't think the Beach Boys could have done the same thing.

Weren't the Beatles really impressed with "Pet Sounds" as an artistic effort? Apparently it didn't sell as well as earlier BB albums. "SMiLE" got shelved for decades, so people couldn't recognize Brian Wilson's creative range.

Danny Gatton did a great, great instrumental version of this song.

In High School, a group of 4 guys, me singing Alto, sang this song in a talent contest.
Didn't win, of course, but it was great fun and fond memories.
Giving this a 10, in honor of my Dad.

Agree totally. The BB were brilliant but pigeonholed themselves into a twee genre that didn't get the respect it might have otherwise. The Beatles certainly had their weird moments but were much more evolved in their musical output. Still, I feel lucky to have been a part of the BB phenomenon in the day; they made the greatest music together!

The more I listen to these guys, the more I appreciate them.  Brilliant songwriting and production.  I sometimes think that had it not been for the constraint of the "surf/high school" genre they fell into, they would be more highly regarded than the Beatles.  And I am a huge Beatles fan.

 pure godlike genius this..{#Cheers}
Great song.
Haven't heard this in ages. Nice.
Wow. Never played?!
Love it!!!

One of the most underrated songs of all time, just outstanding.{#Clap}10
Every website I have gone to, there has been a different story behind the song "Fun Fun Fun." But the truth is that the song was written when the band's van broke down. While it was being fixed, the daughter of the station owner told them about how she would always sneak the t-bird out at night to race and say she was just "Studying late." They thought it would make a good song so they had it written by the time their van was ready. The reason i know this story is that it is written about my grandmother. They took pictures together and everything. This took place in California. If you don't believe me....

Hearing the Beach Boys on Radio Paradise just fits perfectly. And... LizDeines and themotion... if hearing the Beach Boys makes you want to commit suicide and/or cause yourself harm, I'd hate to see your record collections.

He is obviously operating in a higher stratum than I am, because I don't like most of his (their) stuff. However, the BB sound is, in general, a MAJOR impediment for me. It always grated on me, and I grew up in Southern California.
i love when he plays shins and beach boys together.
Ah, the sounds of summer. Makes being trapped in my office after such a nice long weekend not seem as bad as it really is.

Yep.
Brian Wilson is a genius
Deep, contemplative and prescient of the dark side of depression that was to befall Brian Wilson. This is an exquisite work of depth by a truly talented band of genius.

Following The Shins' Phantom Limb with a Beach Boys tune is pretty clever and funny, but there are better choices than In My Room. And now it's drifted into California Stars. So this is turning into a pretty great set. But, still, sub in a different Beach Boys tune on the next go 'round.
I was just thinking that The Shins sounded an awful lot like a modern day Beach Boys...but I disagree with you, this lead in was perfect. 'In My Room' in between The Shins and California Stars is spot on!

What was extraordinary about this, at the time, was that it played against the fun-fun-fun stereotype of the Beach Boys. It is contemplative, and definitely hits the emotional mark for an adolescent or, really, anyone struggling with identity or other introspective issues. Unfortunately, the Beach Boys really were never allowed to break free of the carefree, surfer sound. Eventually, they became trapped within that confining genre. Too bad, because it obscured the genius of Brian Wilson.
who says ole bill dont listen to the masses?
I was just gonna say, either some Guster or Beach Boys would sound really good after The Shins. You nailed it, Bill -- and thanks!
Whoohoo! Takes me back to when my brother and I used to wait anxiously for Finkelman's 45s to come on CBC Radio on Saturday night so we could tape all the great music. Listening to some of those tapes now it was atrocious quality, but the songs were still classic. Kick back that rug, turn down the dimmer switch...
I'm all for a little Beach Boys but this isn't the greatest song ever. Play "Do It Again" in the middle of one of the crappy synth sets some time. edit-I just looked and except for God Only Knows there aren't any of the really great BB songs on RP at all, just the good but overplayed(everywhere) commercial ones. That is very un-RP like. Huh.
one of my Dad's favourite songs, never been a big Beach Boys fan myself, but there you go...
Good one, Bill, right after "Phantom Limb" - now how about Weezer's "Buddy Holly" next?

physicsgenius, there is really no need to remain ignorant about such things when the information is literally at your fingertips. That comment could have been nothing more than trolling, but if you really want to educate yourself then just read this. Maybe the Beach Boys will never appeal to you, and that's OK, but at least you'll understand their appeal. And what's more, your opinions will be taken more seriously when they rise above stereotypes like "just a 60s boy band" and are free of factual inaccuracies like "they sing off-key".

Speaking of Pet Sounds, why is there only one track from Pet Sounds played on RP?
But "God Only Knows" is a beautifully sung classic.

I'll echo that sentiment and also add a few more Beach Boys songs that should be considered for cyber play: Til I Die, Surf's Up, and just about anything from the Pet Sounds album.
I agree wholeheartly! I uploaded this, along with the ones mentioned by you and jjafri. Everybody thinks all they did was "surf" music... how wrong they are. Even this song has an interesting meaning behind it. Just listen to the lyrics. It's interesting to know the story behind this one. When the rest of the group was disagreeing and bickering who was the best, Brian went off by himself, wrote this, recorded it with some studio musicians then released it. It became a hit and he still gave credit to the group. Silencing the big mouths for a short time.

Any Beach Boys music is welcome but for the crowd that gives this one a 1, play "Sail On Salor more often. Also please add "Feel Flows" and "It's About Time","Marsella" and "Cabinessence" to your playlist. You are after all an alternative station and there is more than a little alternative Beach Boys music out there. No one plays it and a service such as yours should consider it your duty to do so. This song, IMR, is a fine oldie but there are plenty of oldies stations still willing and able to play it, same goes for most of your other Beach Boys selections.
This is why I love RP! I'm always surprised at the rich and varied content. Thanks, Bill!
You've got to be kidding me. I feel like pushing my #2 lead pencil into my eye. Break time.
Danger Will Robinson!!! We're going down!!! Abandon ship. M'aidez! M'aidez!!!

a very rare day indeed !! Two of these in one day. I haven't given even one in over two months!!
Awesome track for a winter's day... or a summer one, too. Sounds just like the Beach Boys.
