It's not what you thought
When you first began it
You got what you want
Now you can hardly stand it, though
By now you know
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
Till you wise up

You're sure there's a cure
And you have finally found it
You think one drink
Will shrink you till you're underground
And living down
But it's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
Till you wise up

Prepare a list for what you need
Before you sign away the deed
'Cause it's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
Till you wise up

No, it's not going to stop
Till you wise up
No, it's not going to stop
So just give up

I'd like to make some music with her. Not that way! The way I said. Well maybe the other way too, but only after making it the way I said.
You got what you want.  Now you can hardly stand it.

Ever been there?  Yeah, me too.  We're such a funny species ain't we?  😏

Well said.  I was passively listening, then the chord sequence went somewhere unexpected and beautiful, and it had me.
Beautiful.
Amazes me when songs have such a simple sounding piano, yet stop me in my tracks - hooky.

The song will always remind me of this sketch from a UK satirical and very dark comedy Jam:

This was used in a great SNL sketch with Will Ferrell and Julianna Margulies.

Sponge Hammer is the name of my chillout metal band.

That's what I demand from my music. "Good word play."

ping, ping, PING?  (sponge hammer)  ;-)
Sublime.
Most AM songs make me want to pop my clogs, but this is a thing of beauty.
Perfect song, the movie sequence when this song is playing is incredible, one of my favourite songs ever.
Warms my heart!

HA!

"You got what you want
Now you can hardly stand it.."

Oh boy can I identify with THAT line.  I suspect anyone who lives long enough will agree, too.  And having gotten what I wanted a few times along the way all I can say is these days I enjoy simplicity.  I take each day for what it gives me in open and honest appreciation.  I'm not asking for anything more.  Which......of course....leads to how long before I can't stand it?  Heh!

Sex with chocolate? No thanks, got enough arrhythmia problems already, yet.

Aimee Mann has put out a few clunkers in her time, but wow her voice is beautiful here.
This is very welcome. Chilli chocolate, yumm!

well its about time RP...i have been waiting for aimee mann forever!!!
I love this so much
{#Meditate} Just wonderful
This stopped me in my tracks. Lovely!
Beautiful...!! {#Good-vibes}
Have to boost my rating for this.  Some jerk outside wired his car horn as a car alarm.  So I turn on RP, and Aimee comes in with "NOT GOING TO STOP", harmonizing so well with the horn, I can't hear it any more.

I always know when Aimee is singing.  I get all congested.

No. Play it more. This has so much validity to current events...and the delivery is just divine.
The more I listen the better it gets.... heard it this morning too. :-0
Her voice is so ho-hum...

I really REALLY love this song, but you guys HAVE to stop playing it so much.

I never thought a song like this could be overplayed, especially years after its release, but it's like an everyday thing at this point.

It might seem that way, but the site's info differs. According to what it says today, "Plays in last 30 days: 4."  Just look up to the top of the page.

Not one of my favorite Aimee Mann songs, but very good nonetheless.  Actually, I liked the movie more than this song.
Nice!
Please make it stop....because it's not going to stop but it should...
Never get tired of this.

I very much doubt Aimee lied to me!
Changed my mind, Aimee! OK, I will marry you!
I love this song, but I keep hearing the bass that enters after the first chorus as playing a "wrong" note on the lower chords. It's hard to put my finger on it, but I find it's most prominent on the "so _just_ give up".
tingles down the spine every time...
..how is it Aimee kept so vital, all these years..remarkable!..

No it didn't. It was written specifically for Magnolia. Just like when she wrote Christmastime for PTA's Hard Eight.

I know Bill catches a little heat for spinning this one a fair amount. I've heard it on RP dozens of times myself and it still it hits me right between the eyes every time I hear it. (Geez...I wrote a very similiar comment not long ago. Down to my last 600 brain cells).

What is it about Aimee Mann that gets under your skin? Few singers can change my mood so dramatically, and not always for the better! She can make me feel vulnerable, melancholy and tender within moments. Remarkable.
You still going strong making the Mann Family Proud!

Good Bass

Bill catches a little heat in the perception that he might like Aimee Mann too much. Phooey, I say.
This song is arresting. I stop and just listen when I hear it anywhere. Bravo, RP.

missing the "in-love" emo on this one {#Lol}
My favorite singer/songwriter in these days! Very nice music, voice, arrangement, everything nice!
Still Godlike.
Honestly when I saw Magnolia and this song played during the movie I shed some tears. I have loved Aimee Mann since 'Til Tuesday
she has such a lovely voice...
This song always makes me stop what I'm doing and listen.

Saw the movie in a near empty theatre during the day. Playing hooky I think. Shocking in so many ways. I think I went through every emotion with that one. So powerful and heavy, one can only watch it every once in a while.

No doubt. Incredible movie with awesome performances, a great swan song for the late great Jason Robards, and Ms. Mann's elegiac (always wanted to use that word in a sentence), soaring soundtrack fits the whole film like a glove. Wonderful stuff.

It may sound cheesy but I think her voice is very organic.  {#Rolleyes}

Aimee is Da'Mann  in so many ways.

If that's true, it's pretty pathetic. Phil Collins has had his pop song moments, but none of them rated a glance at an Oscar.
Is this song also playing in the end scenes of Requiem for a Dream? images from that appear in my head when I hear this song - DEPRESSING!
otherwise quite like the song and would like to disassociate the two.

That's funny.  We were just sitting down to watch an episode of Community, and this song comes on.  Every time I hear it, I see Chevy Chase dancing around in a tutu...

What I do know is that the director chose Amy to write all the music for the soundtrack.

Thanks.
Beautifully written, at least.
Beautiful voice
I was a big fan of Jules Shear until I got jealous over Aimee :-)
Ok, Aimee Mann is stalking me.  Yesterday I heard an old interview being played on one Sirius channel, a song of hers played on a different channel.  This morning one of her songs was sampled for a segment on the local NPR station, and again I'm hearing it here.

Wonderful song and album.  Great showcase for Aimee.
Please make "it stop".
Love Aimee Mann, and this one is particularly touching.  Her voice is perfect.

  From wikipedia....

Screenplay

By the time he started writing the script he was listening to Aimee Mann's music.<4> Anderson used her two solo albums and some demo tracks from a new album that Mann was working on as a basis and inspiration for the film.<8> In particular, Mann's song "Deathly", on her album Bachelor No. 2 or, the Last Remains of the Dodo, features the lyric "Now that I've met you/Would you object to/Never seeing each other again", which was used by Claudia as line of dialogue in the film.<4> In addition, "Deathly" also inspired the character of Claudia.<8>

Great song, amazing movie  {#Daisy}

Magnolia is definitely in my top 100 all-time films, maybe even in the top 25 of those. . .

Now we know where the Kings of Leon get their ideas from, I definitely hear use somebody
Beautiful song by Aimee!
Yea, this is my Aimee Mann favorite.{#Yes}

Um, yes, it's a beautiful song. A note to all you out there, however: don't listen to this album on heavy rotation when you're really depressed and lonely at college, dealing with unrequited love (not to mention a total and complete A-hole{#Evil}—I have never met anyone so cruel and doubt  I ever will again) because you don't have enough self-esteem to realize the hell you're putting yourself through.
Law of attraction: dark and miserable attracts dark and miserable..... Love this song though.  Thank god that's over! Here's to WISING UP {#Daisy} Thanks Bill.
