growing up it was just me and my mom
against the world
and all my sympathies were with her
when i was a little girl
but now i've seen both my parents
play out the hands they were dealt
and as each year goes by
i know more about how my father must have felt

i just want you to understand
that i know what all the fighting was for
and i just want you to understand
that i'm not angry anymore
i'm not angry anymore

she taught me how to wage a cold war
with quiet charm
but i just want to walk
through my life unarmed
to accept and just get by
like my father learned to do
but without all the acceptance and getting by
that got my father through

night falls like people into love
we generate our own light
to compensate
for the lack of light from above
every time we fight
a cold wind blows our way

but we learn like the trees
how to bend
how to sway and say

i, i think i understand
what all this fighting is for
and baby, i just want you to understand
that i'm not angry anymore
no, i'm not angry anymore

Love Ani DiFranco but Bill please play some tracks from Dilate or her latest album Binary

I always feel odd sitting next to someone who's love of a band is equal to my own because invariably I'll think to myself, "Is this what their fan base looks like?"

The only time I ever thought it was weird was one time Gretchen Phillips (Two Nice Girls) wondered aloud why she attracted so many straight guys to her shows.
I saw Phranc a couple times, TNG several times, Melissa Etheridge, etc. While you can't help but notice the makeup of the audience, it never seemed like a big deal.

As a dad estranged from his two children, I both feel your loss and thank you for this comment.  Deeply.
I love this song
On this post election morning, yep, I'm still angry. Working on that.

I changed the channel away from RP.  Grating, horrible stuff.
This song hits home.  As a divorced parent of three girls, two of which I have been estranged by my ex wife, I can only hope that they will some day realize how hard their dad tried to be there for them.

This song doesn't have any banjo. It is a 4 string guitar. Trust me, I have seen her half a dozen times, last month most recently. Hail to Ani.She is phenomenally talented.

Yes, it's also called a tenor guitar, which does have four strings and is usually tuned to fifths (like a banjo) instead of fourths (like a guitar). Apparently she has several of those guitars.
One of her strongest albums, a must own if you like Ani - amazing musician and songwriter.

His voice sounds like David Gilmour (when he was younger) in this song.

Meh.

Ani DiFranco is chick music totally.. for the kind of chicks who think they're tough but cry at the drop of a dime.

Any guy who says he likes her music is just trying to get in touch with his feminine side... or trying to get some from a girl who probably only likes other girls.

I'm a guy.
I like a lot of Ani's music.
You're a jackass
Good song.
Needs a different singer.

Funny how women listen to "guy" music all the time, but a talented artist like Ani is immediately out of consideration for a male fan. Grow up.
This really sucks.
Great song off a so-so album by a brilliant artist at a turning point in her career.

Ani is hit & miss, but when it hits, it hits SO GOOD!
Oh this is very nice!  I have kind of a bad taste in my mouth for Ani Difranco after hearing "Emancipated Minor" off her Red Letter Year album too many times.  That song is just horrid, but this is so much better!  I think I just have to be picky about which Ani Difranco songs I listen to.

hands up! good song.
Elvis Costello has a similarly themed song on his first album (I'm Not Angry), only he still sounded angry when he was singing that he wasn't angry anymore. I guess what I'm trying to say is I'd rather hear an agrier Elvis C. than a mellower Ani D. ...

Mike, as a guy who likes Ani's music, I do feel like it helps me stay in touch with my feminine side. You make it sound like there is something wrong with that. What gives? I find most men who are not in touch with their feminine side suffer from feelings of insecurity. These usually stem from a fear that their father never really appreciated them. Sadly, this is usually because the father was unable to express his feelings because he was afraid of his own feminine side. And so it goes through the generations. Over emphasizing the masculine, and shunning the feminine, is a common defense against this particular inferiority complex. And - just to be a guy about this whole thing - yes, a few of the Ani-fan chicks I've "gotten some from" over the years have been into other chicks at one time or another. Yep, there's nothing quite like a roll in the hay with a brainy, passionate chick who's not afraid to fully explore her sexuality. But that's not really a reason to like Ani DiFranco...just a pleasant side effect.

This one isnt quite as breathy or delivered with so many pauses as "As Is" or "32 Flavors" so I find myself enjoying it more. Nice banjo, too.
It's nice to know Ani isn't angry anymore. She was angry a lot when she was younger. Which is probably why I dug her.

Excellent!
she just gave birth to a righteous baby girl! yay ANI!!!!
True, honest songwriting sung by a true, honest chick. Rock on, Ani.
Since I posted that I hated a different Ani song, I will add some balance by saying I like this one. If she would avoid the spastic guitar and make it more like this, I would like her more.

She reminds me of Nancy Griffith without the twang

What's wrong with "chick" music? Women do make up more than half of the U.S. population. Men and women obviously appreciate her "other" perspective on issue evident from Ani's amazing album sales and Righteous Babe Records' independent success. We've been spoon feed the white male take on the world for the past several hundred years, what is wrong with a different voice (unless you are that white man who is very afraid of losing his power …) And most women do cry easier than men as our physiology makes us more emotionally responsive – it does not indicate weakness. And men getting in touch with their feminine side? What the hell is wrong with that? What is your point?

That's such a load of crap. You sir are either a troll, or a earnest but misguided man who doesn't really know much about people outside of your own skin. As a guy who does like Ani, who knows exactly who he is, and is happily married to a woman who is not a big Ani fan, I can tell you honestly that your simplification of things is just plain wrong. I like Ani because she is a talented, headstrong singer/songwriter who isn't afraid to say whatever she wants. If that threatens some men, and even some women, then that is their problem and not hers.

Hmm. I dunno. Sounds like a simple song to dad. Maybe apologizing for siding so steadfastly with mom, and now looking back realizing maybe mom wasn't right all the time, maybe not at all even.
I agree that that is part of what she's saying, but I think there's more to it then that. Ani tends to have that kind of layering to her lyrics, though many seem to only see the angry part. Interviews with her show a very well adjusted, complete human being who I would love to meet. And for a song that inspires soooo many negative comments its doing rather well in terms of rating. A 7 is more than a little respectable.
You should be angry, because you suck, Ani.

this is exactly the type of music I don't like. Man, but that's the fun thing about RP, right?
Yup, who cares, grow up. Life happens.
outstanding album... amazing song. love it love it love it
I was having the worst day. I was feeling angry and cranky and bitchy and rotten and you have played a tori song and and this very excellent ani! thank you. i feel so much better. trying to focus on these lyrics.
Sorry, Ani.... who cares? If I didn't ever hear one more tune from her, it'd be OK.
I'd say this song is gay - and in the original meaning - it is very positive, and with a great tune!
Leslie wrote:
What does that mean musically? Do you have any insightful comments with regard to the music? As far as I know, "Gay" is not a musical category.
I think it's a shame that the word gay has been railroaded as a sexual term, and can't be used any more in its original sense. The original meaning of 'gay' before all the modern connotations took over was 'lighthearted, free of hindrances, carefree." I can't speak for the original poster, but if that was their meaning then I think it's appropriate in describing a piece of music. Don't you?

Hmm. I usually have an appreciation for Ani, but this song really got me, not in a Kinks kinda way, though.

No? Have you heard the "Queer As Folk" soundtrack?
good choice. Bill did you choose this one because her Dad passed away a few days ago? It forced her to cancel a few shows, including one in San Diego where i was going to get to see her for the first time. very sad.

Not my genra of choice.. but a very good song.. Nice lyrics, good up beet tempo. Great voice and not too twangy. Would like to hear more from this artist.

Thanks for the ongoing education in Ani. It\'s a treat!
Like Suzanne said, songs like this are the reason I listen to Ani. :)
