Went to the Iggy Pop gig at the student union building on the UC Berkeley campus back a ways when I was living in Berkeley circa the tear gas days surrounding the legendary peoples park conflict.  

Iggy got onstage with his minimalist band (drums, bass) and as he launched into the opening tune the power was apparently intentionally cut in the building and the emergency lighting came on.  Iggy was unfazed, said FU and continued to play acapella until the fire department and the police forced him off stage to loud boos.  The crowd refused to leave and a skirmish ensued with Iggy leading the charge.  UC Berkeley publicly apologized the next day.

Quite the gig.

Makes sense - explains why he is known for bringing young performers up on stage. And stands back and lets them shine, instead of staying in the spotlight. Helps they most often slay it. DG seems like a class act.

"Getting it in the ear" is a English term for being nagged at.
In the context of the song I'd surmise that he and David bowie were getting it in the ear for their constant use of liquor and drugs and living the "high life" due to their mutual "Lust for life"

"Had it in the ear" was an expression that meant one was taken advantage of, screwed over, or otherwise treated unfairly.  Like you were poked in the ear with a pencil...or worse (as that picture in your mind was developing) 
ex: "Man, I really got it in the ear from the company when they made me salaried instead of hourly."
I don't think it's commonly used much anymore.

In April 2013, I visited the studio in Berlin where Iggy and Bowie crafted this great song (and album). If you are ever in Berlin you should check out Hansa By The Wall studio. Lotta history there - Bowie, Iggy, U2, Depeche Mode. All made classic albums there. Very cool studio. You can see some of Hansa By The Wall in U2's "One" video. Also took a tour to 155 Hauptstrasse - the apt where Bowie and Iggy lived while in Berlin.

I don't know, these guys weren't that old when they started their downward slides, all of them could be said to have started losing their touch in the 80's, even Iggy. I don't think it's a matter of getting older so much as a matter of getting comfortable in a niche.
 
In 1980 Paul Simon turned 39, Elton John and Iggy Pop turned 33 and Stevie Wonder turned 30 (and of course he started his career as a teenager.)

Make a list of your 25 favorite rock songs and my bet is that the vast majority were written and performed by someone who was 25 or younger at the time.

I could never really afford to buy CDs or records until around the time the movie Trainspotting came out.  I was driving a beat up old car with a giant dent in the side, and I could barely make the payments.  What little spending money I had went to whatever social life I was able to scrape together in Wrigleyville, Chicago (great times).  So, I bought the Trainspotting CD, mainly on the strength of this song - they had just started playing this in heavy rotation on XRT.  It was a life-changing CD for me, because Brian Eno's Deep Blue Day is also on that CD...
