River, river carry me on
Living river carry me on
River, river carry me on
To the place where I come from
So deep, so wide, will you take me on your back for a ride
If I should fall, would you swallow me deep inside
River, show me how to float
I feel like I'm sinking down
Thought that I could get along
But here in this water
My feet won't touch the ground
I need something to turn myself around
Going away, away towards the sea
River deep, can you lift up and carry me
Oh roll on though the heartland
'Til the sun has left the sky
River, river carry me high
'Til the washing of the water make it all alright
Let your waters reach me like she reached me tonight
Letting go, it's so hard
The way it's hurting now
To get this love untied
So tough to stay with thing
'Cause if I follow through
I face what I denied
I get those hooks out of me
And I take out the hooks that I sunk deep in your side
Kill that fear of emptiness, loneliness I hide
River, oh river, river running deep
Bring me something that will let me get to sleep
In the washing of the water will you take it all away
Bring me something to take this pain away
Living river carry me on
River, river carry me on
To the place where I come from
So deep, so wide, will you take me on your back for a ride
If I should fall, would you swallow me deep inside
River, show me how to float
I feel like I'm sinking down
Thought that I could get along

As if he was trying to remake Lord, here comes the flood. But this time it doesn't work.
If you like this song as much as me, can I highly recommend the version he sang with Jools Holland & His Rhythm and Blues Orchestra on the album - Jack O The Green: Small World Big Band Friends 3
I actually even prefer it to the original

what’s wrong with me?
I considered myself fairly well-versed in PG’s anthology.
I heard his unmistakable pipes and IMMEDIATELY stopped what I was doing to drink this in. I don’t recall ever hearing it before.
TY RP!! I love you more each & every day!!
This song is proof there is a god. And its name is Peter Gabriel.

Here's one good Peter Gabriel song, and this one gets such a low rating, whereas I have to skip the others that have brilliant ratings.

My daughter asked the other day whether I new of any albums where all the songs were good. This one sprang to mind immediately. It's like a greatest hits album.

Astounding vocal range. Delicate, yet Powerful.
Great Tenderness and Passion
PG is a welcome voice in my dreary day to day, what an artist and instructor on strength and sincerity

The "Us" album was an example of seriously drab production - each song on this album is eclipsed by its live counterpart on the "Secret World" live cd/video/dvd. This song is no exception - here it is slow and dull, on Secret World it is also slow, but passionate and interesting at the same time.
Speak for yourself. This album is golden. :)

Truly , a great song, from a great artist with true insight.
Normally I love PG's stuff, but those thin, whiny high notes are appalling to me this morning. :(
Beautiful Gabriel song. I sang this for a High School audition for the musical Fiddler on the Roof, I got the part. Anyway, great song.
