Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
I woke up in a Soho doorway
A policeman knew my name
He said "You can go sleep at home tonight
If you can get up and walk away"
I staggered back to the underground
And the breeze blew back my hair
I remember throwin' punches around
And preachin' from my chair
[chorus:]
Well, who are you? (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
I really wanna know (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
Tell me, who are you? (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
'Cause I really wanna know (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
I took the tube back out of town
Back to the Rollin' Pin
I felt a little like a dying clown
With a streak of Rin Tin Tin
I stretched back and I hiccupped
And looked back on my busy day
Eleven hours in the Tin Pan
God, there's got to be another way
Who are you?
Ooh wa ooh wa ooh wa ooh wa ...
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
[chorus]
I know there's a place you walked
Where love falls from the trees
My heart is like a broken cup
I only feel right on my knees
I spit out like a sewer hole
Yet still recieve your kiss
How can I measure up to anyone now
After such a love as this?
[chorus]
fuck yeah : )
Fuck yeah bud great story
It's kinda funny for me to read all the negative comments about this song & The Who overall. I was born in 1953 & was lucky enough to work in a great record store in the 70's. The Who were never a great band for me back then. Now however, I have come to love most of their wonderful music.
Wonderful would be a great overstatement I think
boy Mr. Moon really drums his ass off.
Please name a Who track in which that does not occur.
CSI show wrecked this one for me. But after years of ignoring it, nice to hear it on FLAC
I agree! ...much better!
Why are you playing this craptastic song, Mr. Bill?

Well, yes, and Keith Moon being awesome, as usual! ; )
I saw the Quadrophenia tour, a life-changing experience! At the old Boston Garden. They tore the place six ways to Sunday. Oh, Lynyrd Skynyrd was the opening band. We had no idea who they were but we called them back for an encore with The Who waiting to come on!!

Unless it isn't? Receive or glacier?
If that gets you try Featherstonehough being "Fanshaw". Love English language rules.
As regards The Who great stuff, unfortunately we were only able to see Roger and Pete's version live Very good , young Starkey drums and Pino Palladino on bass.
"Receive" abides by the rule. Saw them with Roger and Pete and Ringo's kid at Chase Center in SF in September, 2019. Love how "through" ('threw') becomes "trough" ('troff') by removing the first "h"...
In my younger days I always wondered how my local radio station got away with playing the fuck version, but they did.
1982...2002. Spectacular

I was lucky enough to see them at Giants Stadium in 1986. Even in the nosebleed seats, their power and stage presence were amazing.
I was there too - was about 12 rows from the front center. My whole body reverberated - I had to put makeshift earplugs in after about 1/2 hr. My ears rang for weeks! One of the best concerts ever :) and luckily I still have my earring to listen to some great RP tunes;)
For the sheer POWER of it, no doubt, Mr. Grayson.
Our african gray parrot named Grayson...rambunctious sumbitch rocker must say
(as is said a lot in the comments) Thank you RP!
Many folk who were too young to rock out in the 70's, an awesome musical era IMHO, only know this song from its incessant repetition of the refrain as the theme song of some TV show (CSI) that started out good but got increasingly lame over the years. I got sick of hearing the theme, too, as my wife was a big CSI fan. Despite the overplay, I still love the Who. On this, they did sell out, just as Pete feared. After Who's Next, my musical horizon broadened. Had to go out and buy two more Who albums... BTW, I DID NOT give the song a 1 or anything close. But had I not already been a Who fan, CSI would have ruined them for me. Pity, that...

Before the local classic rock station went to complete shit, they used to play the 'bad' words with no apologies at all, now remember, this isn't rap we're talking about, but freaking classic ROCK and on occasion sure a shit or fuck come through...once the bad words were removed I removed my ears from their stations and have become a fulltime non-FM listener....so Who the fuck am I? An RP listener, that's who...Long Live RP!!
I was born in 53 as well, and remember buying Whos Next and being blown away by it. Great Band.
I use that to explain that although spelt Who, you can't actually hear the W!
Grissom's taken it for analysis.
Would you be shocked to learn that your tastes in music are not universally embraced?
For the sheer POWER of it, no doubt, Mr. Grayson.

Hearing a Who track, no one said: more drumming!
Daltrey has a reasonable, if not superlative voice. Obviously Moon and Entwhistle were great at what they do.
Is it the consistent use of cheesy keyboards?
The poor backing vocals?
The generally lame lyrics barely even worth discussing?
Is it the overblown opera about pinball that seemed really cool when I was 12 but now seems really pretentious?
Maybe it's just that FM radio only plays the bad Who songs?
I really don't know. Shrug.
it's just teetotaler rock... having said that, this isn't their worst song.
don't bother trying to analize The Who, they are just lame
.
can I get a 'beep beep' from the 'Going Mobile' crowd?
As always here at RP, diverse opinions are welcome and encouraged.

Methinks the events in this song took place in London which has a "Tube", a more famous SoHo, and was where Townshend was living with his "Rolling Pin" at the time it was written. The music business part may well be true, though, given the "Tin Pan" line (which could be an allusion to the whole business rather than specifically NYC's Tin Pan Alley) could be further supported by a verse that was dropped from the original:
I used to check my reflection, jumping with my cheap guitar
I must have lost my direction, cause I ended up a superstar
One-nighters in the boardroom petrify the human brain
You can learn from my mistakes, but you're posing in the glass again

Seriously....."who who, who who?" Definitely the epitome of 'lame'.
Ah who the fuck are you?
Must.. turn.... volume......up.....
8......9......9.5....10...10.5....12...15.........
Something is wrong with my headphones
Can't seem to get them loud enough. :(

It was the 70's dude. Don't bother trying to wrap your head around anything that happened in the 70's.

Count your blessings, children. Radio is being smothered by the self-designated "moral, politically-correct' group who seems to have the airwaves by the short hairs.
I think I'm understanding why people want vinyl - it was the very beginning of true uncensored music. Anyone with vinyl and a turntable is guaranteed to hear the ORIGINAL work of an artist, warts and all. Everything after vinyl has been digitally remastered (translation: censored, modified, upgraded, "enhanced," made more "sell-able.")
Well, this settles it - I'm going back to vinyl. A friend of mine just informed me that there's a unit that converts vinyl to CD, and it's actually almost in my price-range. The conversion takes a long time, but I'm not employed, and winter's coming on, so maybe this might be something I can do. I'll need blank CDs and jackets or jewel cases, but it'll be fun.
We'll see how it goes...
miss you so much Cynaera...
everybody in my alien space craft loves this song...
I can never listen to this song too loud. I push any stereo to the max when listen to this song.
Good Shit!
love it
All those years later, right after 9-11 and the last concert that John Entwistle ever played on American soil, The Who still show how it's done.
... but, sadly, it took him.
(and how fun to think of the f-word making it onto the FM airwaves for so many years now....)
yup

the Louis C. K. video - I do that still. With or without anyone in the car. No choice.

The last great album by The Who.
. not a coincidence.
Apparently this SONG is the last song Moon recorded! Although "Music Must Change" was the last song the Who recorded for the album, Moon didn't play on that track.
Um, I'm not sure that's really the issue; it's more the marketing power of Wal-Mart that's the problem there. My CD has the unedited version of this song.
And that's great - the problem is what's being played on FM radio - which used to be so progressive and rebellious. Now, it's just AM radio with a different bandwidth. It's a gelded stallion. Pretty, but no power.

Fred is almost always right. Be careful what you say.
Close, but not quite.
Lead singer sounds like Adam Sandler singing on SNL!
Adam Sandler was probably around 10 years-old when this came out. Why do so many people use SNL (especially the unfunny, post-Belushi/Ackroyd/Radner concoctions) as a reference point for culture?
Just can't get into much of their stuff with the exception of Baba O'Rieley.
Except that this is Daltrey's singing, not Townsend's wailing - which means your statement must not apply to this song, right?
Nope. Pete "just curious, me" Townsend and Roger "big hair" Daltrey are equally dire in the wailing department. This song is an insta-mute, as indeed is the major part of The Who's oeuvre. 'Oo are ya, 'oo are ya...
when my Creative 6.1 speakers died ... I moved my old JVC RX-884V receiver into my "home office". 5.1 surround @110 watts per channel, JBL Center speaker, Sony fronts, surrounds, & sub ... yeah.. why did I wait for the creatives to die?

Even Bestbuy sells turntables that burn vinyl into mp3.s. I can't speak to the quality of the file, haven't tried it yet. I of late, however, have had trouble with my car players that play mp3 filled cd's, when they skip they REALLY skip or degrade, chirp loudly, back up and all sorts of digital weirdness. The one with a usb port off of a flashdrive works better but still the navigating technology leaves me wanting more. Waiting for a home machine that turns cd's into hot pressed vinyl. THAT would be awesome.

yeah, me too. but it's the perfect song for it.
Agreed. LZ and Pink Floyd are standing up the best IMO. But The Who is still winning out over The Doors.
Yes, but I have to admit that, having never been a Who fan, I am appreciating them more and more now. Especially the drums and bass. I somehow missed that for 35 years?? Go figure.

"I could watch this video for hours. Its a musical eargasm. Its hilarious. Its tragic. Its a masterpiece. There will never be another character like Keith Moon. No disrespect to John Bonham fans, but Moon was the best drummer ever." tidefootball27
