Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?

I woke up in a Soho doorway
A policeman knew my name
He said "You can go sleep at home tonight
If you can get up and walk away"

I staggered back to the underground
And the breeze blew back my hair
I remember throwin' punches around
And preachin' from my chair

[chorus:]
Well, who are you? (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
I really wanna know (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
Tell me, who are you? (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
'Cause I really wanna know (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)

I took the tube back out of town
Back to the Rollin' Pin
I felt a little like a dying clown
With a streak of Rin Tin Tin

I stretched back and I hiccupped
And looked back on my busy day
Eleven hours in the Tin Pan
God, there's got to be another way

Who are you?
Ooh wa ooh wa ooh wa ooh wa ...

Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?
Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?

[chorus]

I know there's a place you walked
Where love falls from the trees
My heart is like a broken cup
I only feel right on my knees

I spit out like a sewer hole
Yet still recieve your kiss
How can I measure up to anyone now
After such a love as this?

[chorus]

I got my shows crossed for a second and thought this was going to be the Law and Order theme... which would have been AWESOME
Pete Townshed could write a rock anthem like no other. And of course his band delivered!

This album was released my Sr Year of High school. I still consider it new Who. Keith Moons last album, and I never really followed the Who after. “Who the fuck are you”., of course AM rock stations played and edited version…… classic rock n roll
Video in London studios in 78 is amazing !!! Keith "Moon the Loon" !!!!
Please! Rejecting The Who will only make your life sadder than it is now…
never been my favorite Who song although I'll listen to it.
Funny memory I have on this one: It was the third record I bought and I was wondering which guy the mad drummer was ...the one with the jeans jacket or the one with the white shirt ;-)

Wonderful would be a great overstatement I think

Song is ok but how come is it played only 7 songs apart, twice in less than an hour ?

If that gets you try Featherstonehough being "Fanshaw". Love English language rules.

As regards The Who great stuff, unfortunately we were only able to see Roger and Pete's version live Very good , young Starkey  drums and Pino Palladino on bass.

"Receive" abides by the rule. Saw them with Roger and Pete and Ringo's kid at Chase Center in SF in September, 2019. Love how "through" ('threw') becomes "trough" ('troff') by removing the first "h"...
Love when Roger ran in place while performing it.
I'm not one to like the word "fuck" used in lyrics (like every other word on a Guns n Roses album), but the use of fuck on this song is so perfect.  "Who the fuck are you?"

In my younger days I always wondered how my local radio station got away with playing the fuck version, but they did.
The cover of this album is so haunting. (RIP Moonie)

I was lucky enough to see them at Giants Stadium in 1986.  Even in the nosebleed seats, their power and stage presence were amazing.

I was there too - was about 12 rows from the front center.  My whole body reverberated - I had to put makeshift earplugs in after about 1/2 hr.  My ears rang for weeks!  One of the best concerts ever :) and luckily I still have my earring to listen to some great RP tunes;)

Every time this song comes on whatever we are listening to it is always the same question:  will we hear "who the fuck are you" or not?  Almost always - no.
(as is said a lot in the comments) Thank you RP!
Why doesn’t my teenager like this? What happened to music?

Many folk who were too young to rock out in the 70's, an awesome musical era IMHO, only know this song from its incessant repetition of the refrain as the theme song of some  TV show (CSI) that started out good but got increasingly lame over the years. I got sick of hearing the theme, too, as my wife was a big CSI fan. Despite the overplay, I still love the Who.  On this, they did sell out, just as Pete feared. After Who's Next, my musical horizon broadened. Had to go out and buy two more Who albums... BTW, I DID NOT give the song a 1 or anything close. But had I not already been a Who fan, CSI would have ruined them for me. Pity, that...

Daltrey has a reasonable, if not superlative voice. Obviously Moon and Entwhistle were great at what they do.
Is it the consistent use of cheesy keyboards?
The poor backing vocals?
The generally lame lyrics barely even worth discussing?
Is it the overblown opera about pinball that seemed really cool when I was 12 but now seems really pretentious?

This song is based on a day in the life of Pete Townshend. It began with a very long meeting dealing with royalties for his songs: "Eleven hours in the Tin Pan, God, there's got to be another way." The "Tin Pan" he is referring to is "Tin Pan Alley" which is the name given to the collection of New York City-centered music publishers and songwriters who dominated the popular music of the United States. After this excruciating meeting he received a large check for royalties, left and went to a bar and got completely drunk. In that bar he encountered Paul Cook and Steve Jones of The Sex Pistols, who thought very highly of Pete for paving the way for Punk rock music. Townshend was conflicted because he feared The Who had sold out, and seeing The Sex Pistols, who were icons of rebellion, exasperated him even more. Pete left that bar and passed out in a random doorway in Soho (a part of New York). A policeman recognized him ("A policeman knew my name") and being kind, woke him and and told him, "You can go sleep at home tonight (instead of a jail cell), if you can get up and walk away." Pete's response: "Who the f—k are you?" (thanks, Tim - Waterloo, Canada)

Methinks the events in this song took place in London which has a "Tube", a more famous SoHo, and was where Townshend was living with his "Rolling Pin" at the time it was written.  The music business part may well be true, though, given the "Tin Pan" line (which could be an allusion to the whole business rather than specifically NYC's Tin Pan Alley) could be further supported by a verse that was dropped from the original:

I used to check my reflection, jumping with my cheap guitar
I must have lost my direction, cause I ended up a superstar
One-nighters in the boardroom petrify the human brain
You can learn from my mistakes, but you're posing in the glass again

This is one of the few songs played by mainstream radio that I get excited by every time I hear it!!! Crank it!!

Count your blessings, children. Radio is being smothered by the self-designated "moral, politically-correct' group who seems to have the airwaves by the short hairs.

I think I'm understanding why people want vinyl - it was the very beginning of true uncensored music. Anyone with vinyl and a turntable is guaranteed to hear the ORIGINAL work of an artist, warts and all. Everything after vinyl has been digitally remastered (translation: censored, modified, upgraded, "enhanced," made more "sell-able.")

Well, this settles it - I'm going back to vinyl. A friend of mine just informed me that there's a unit that converts vinyl to CD, and it's actually almost in my price-range. The conversion takes a long time, but I'm not employed, and winter's coming on, so maybe this might be something I can do. I'll need blank CDs and jackets or jewel cases, but it'll be fun.

We'll see how it goes...

I enjoy seeing the video for this song. It's fun to see The Who perform. Especially fun to see Keith Moon bash the hell out of his kit. As far as Who songs go...this is NOT very Who-like. To me...the essence of Who sound is something like 'Real Me'. THAT...my friend...is a Who song. This? Not so much.
There is no way in hell this song should ever be rated below 8.  Come on people.

All those years later, right after 9-11 and the last concert that John Entwistle ever played on American soil, The Who still show how it's done.

Even Bestbuy sells turntables that burn vinyl into mp3.s. I can't speak to the quality of the file, haven't tried it yet. I of late, however, have had trouble with my car players that play mp3 filled cd's, when they skip they REALLY skip or degrade, chirp loudly, back up and all sorts of digital weirdness. The one with a usb port off of a flashdrive works better but still the navigating technology leaves me wanting more. Waiting for a home machine that turns cd's into hot pressed vinyl. THAT would be awesome.

Agreed.  LZ and Pink Floyd are standing up the best IMO.  But The Who is still winning out over The Doors.

Yes, but I have to admit that, having never been a Who fan, I am appreciating them more and more now.  Especially the drums and bass.  I somehow missed that for 35 years?? Go figure.

Who tunes haven't aged as well as, say, Led Zeppelin (though, oddly, Pete Townsend solo tunes still sound good; I'm thinking in particular of his tracks on Pete Townsend / Ronnie Lane Rough Mix). But I love their personality and energy. Ten years ago, this might have gotten a 9 from me; now it's more like 7-8.

The Who - "Who Are You" Live-studio (1970´s)

"Its probably because he is improvising, he was the most improvisational drummer has ever seen... "     Trademark691

"I could watch this video for hours. Its a musical eargasm. Its hilarious. Its tragic. Its a masterpiece. There will never be another character like Keith Moon. No disrespect to John Bonham fans, but Moon was the best drummer ever."       tidefootball27

Hmm...I just noticed that song that plays during the ending credits (I think?) of "WKRP in Cincinnati" is eerily similar to "Who Are You". Weird.

Except that this is Daltrey's singing, not Townsend's wailing - which means your statement must not apply to this song, right? {#Naughty}

Fred is almost always right.  Be careful what you say.
