I picked up that something of it
I could still try to make
Then watch me blink and overlook
What I undertake
'Til I don't try
I don't try
and I don't want to try to anymore
I would choose to accuse you
Strike the fire
Issue a decree
Ask you why
Watch you take the fifth as I
Give you the third degree
But I don't try
I don't try
I don't want to try you anymore
I don't try to anymore
I won't try you anymore
With a witness dismisses it's adjourned
And by heart the only rope that it's learned is
Mercifully do not prolong
If the way I'm rubbing you is wrong
That is why I kept away so
I'd look strange at your door
In my way, in a nutshell
I don't try
I won't try
I don't want to try you anymore
I can't try to anymore
I can't try you anymore
I don't try

10/10 for tortoise hearts comment; 2/10 for Crowded House wannabe song.

I HAD to bring this comment back - Winter, you just crack me up. I love Michael Penn's music - he's able to put a twist on any subject matter and be serious and silly at the same time. Quite a gift...
I hear you. But you gotta get over it. I mean, do I boycott every Michael Douglas film, throw pigs' blood and tortoise hearts at him at the premieres, and send daily 5000-word letters full of adolescent angst and lurid erotic poetry to Catherine Zeta-Jones? Wait a minute - yeah, I do. OK, never mind. Do your own thing.

Definitely a Matthew Sweet thing going on here.
I think he's got that pop sensibility that is shared with artists like Elliott Smith, Matthew Sweet, and even Ben Folds.

Someone needs to upload March (1989), please.
The cover must be a reference to the cult BBC TV series The Prisoner, featuring Patrick McGoohan as a secret agent who resigns and is then kidnapped to a strange village. The opening sequence shows lines of filing cabinets with 'Resigned' written on them. More detail at Wikipedia.
Be seeing you :o)

Thank you for jarring my memory, I use to love Michael Penn!! - He's been around a long time, and definitely unsung.
can't help it. still like it.
meh. How uninspired and boring.
His website is attractive when it comes to look but it's crap when it comes to getting infos.
One of the very few Beatles songs I've ever liked! Oh wait..

I agree... I don't know about superstar, but I think he is hugely under rated and very talented.
These days superstar status seems to be reserved for crap pop stars with a few exceptions.

Sounds like one of the brothers Finn, listen to those cords ... I thought this was a recent Split Enz song or something (they reformed to tour)

I guess if I have nothing nice to say I should not say anything... How did this make the RP playlist and it has an average rating of 7??

Well, that ain't a bag gig, now is it?
well I like it. so there. the music says plenty & I don't give a rat's a-- about the rest.
justin timberlake? you must be joking. matthew sweet is more like what I'm thinking.
Outstanding! Great record. The influence Brendan O'Brien had here is marked.

You're entitled to an opinion, even if I don't share it. You say it with such certaintly... that doesn't make your opinion fact though.
I believe Michael Penn is quite talented. Yes, his songs have been hit or miss, but his "March" CD has some excellent writing on it, well deserving of praise. Several of his songs since then have been quite good, IMHO. Yes, I agree that Aimee is probably a better songwriter.... but saying that doesn't mean Michael Penn's accomplishments are any less significant.

No the reason is Mann has Talent Penn doesn't.
When the record companies where knocking on the door both sold out and played the game. When they stopped knocking / when Aimee's writing wasn't as good she was not selling out. Now she has grown as a writter and is not selling out when they are knocking again.
Bottom line, they both bowed to record companies. Aimee is not selling out now and nobody cares what Penn does.
Aimee was 15 the first time around. Doesn't count.

OK, I'll volunteer. I hate to think of JT reduced to grabbing off JJ's clothes for a living.
Ok, attention morons below! Michael Penn is a very talented songwriter who has refused to give into the bullsh*t the music industry is all about. Perhaps mainstream radio is where your comments and ears belong. I'm sure Justin Timberlake could use a few more fans.
This song is excellent!

You're a fugging idiot. You think the bandwidth to do this is free? How about the royalty payments? The legal fees? You think the guy is making a comfortable living doing this? Try it for yourself and see how easy and "almost free" it is. Asstool.
I sincerely home they are making good money off of this. This station is fantastic - so much better than anything on the commercial airways. If they can figure out how to make a killing out of this then more will follow.
GO RP!

Yeah, this is fine -- my kind of tune. Gotta have a power pop sensibility and some jangly hooks to get you through the day.
I liked the song.

And March is still a great album all these years later.
