Consider me a widow, boys
And I will tell you why
It's not the man
But it's the marriage that was drowned

So I walk the walk
And wait with watchful eye up to the sky
Looking for a kind of vessel
I have never found

Though I saw it splinter
I keep looking out to sea
Like a dog with little sense
I keep returning

To the very area
Where I did see the thing go down
As if there's something at the site
I should be learning

That line is the horizon
We watch the wind and set the sail
But save ourselves when all omens
Point to fail

And if I tell the truth
Then I would have to tell you this
Though I grieve and I believe
I feel it truly

But I knew the ship was empty
By the time it hit the rocks
'Cause we could not hold on
When fate became unruly

So consider me a widow, boys
And I have told you why
Does the weather say
A better day is nearing?

I'll set my house in order now
And wait upon the will
'Cause it's clear that I need
Better skill in steering

That line is the horizon
We watch the wind and set the sail
But save ourselves when all omens
Point to fail

That line is the horizon
We watch the wind and set the sail
But save ourselves when all omens
Point to fail
Point to fail
Point to fail

A maritime analogy for a failed marriage. Masterful. (Mistressful?)

The beauty of the recording industry and technology.

Another nice discovery Thanks RP

The entire album is a wonder, and very good to have around during trying times.
No denying that she has a lovely voice. A very in-offensive tune.
This song just makes me want to smile, everytime I hear it.
She has always radiated such sensuality and so effortlessly, amazing. well done, carry on.
Beautiful voice
Never knew she could groove like this! {#Bananajam}
A+ for the killer segway from Evergreen to Widow's Walk. That was just one of the best I've heard in a long while! Kudos Bill!!{#Dancingbanana_2}
damn!  now that's a segue!  kudos to our esteemed host!{#Clap}

Really nice and her approval rating is about double that of Carla Bruni (the French public were polled today and Carla received 35% approval only).

Pretty much anything Suzanne Vega does will get at least an 8 from me - I've loved her music since "Luka" (and she laughingly confessed that the song was written about a teenage neighbor of hers named Luka, who was trying to score with a girl, so he told her he knew Suzanne Vega. I wonder, now, if he managed to get to home base with that girl, based on the fact that Vega was his neighbor...)  Oh, the things one learns from now-defunct syndicated radio programs like "A View From the Front Porch."

I'm with you on this....Loved her from the get go, and this CD is brilliant cover to cover.....the Joni of the 90's?

Do you mean that there is something that (we men) could do to cheer her up and sway her in a different direction? besides, i do not find it necessarily negative. Anyway, what i do have to say is that this tune is a straight 8 for me. Love you Suzanne....
Ah, the chorus really makes this song... soar
YES..better sailing music

Yep! I originally heard a solo acoustic version of this, and I'm kinda stuck on that version. But awesome song, in any case!
NO.
Nice sense of alliteration with this song - she also takes a folk song theme and makes it epic. I normally don't like Suzanne Vega, but I have liked nearly everything y'all have played of hers. This one's a big thumbs up!

I don't see it... I see her negative attitude about her ex on this record, but generally she seems fine with men. Certainly on her first few records, she had lots of nice things to say.

New record coming out REALLY soon!!!! :)
Ok you win, I like her! I've been holding out, but I concede right? An 8/10! Now can we get back to talking about David, please?

I nominate inside Tom's Diner, wherever that is. I can see the want ad now: SEEKING SCULPTOR of a bronze Suzanne Vega statue. Statue must sit at a bar, reading funnies or pouring milk in her coffee. Its important she doesnt appear to be checking out the lady just outside hiking up her skirt and adjusting her stockings. Counter help has only half filled the cup of Suzanne's coffee, he is checking out a woman outside...
Could be a movie. Scene 2?

That acoustic guitar makes this one. She's gotten better since the early stuff, eh? Neat cut.
I guess I have to hear this song more to give it a 10.

8 ---->9 here
I can't believe this is the same singer of "My Name Is Luca". She opened up for Jethro Tull in Long Island, NY once, and I was bored to pieces. This is solid work! Opened to hear more of her, now.

If you like this song, buy the album. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

You know, that pretty much describes all of Suzanne Vega's work for me. I like her stuff at first but after a while it bores me. However, since this is the first time I've heard this song, I'll reserve judgement. So far I like it.
One of my favorites from this CD. Ship wreck / sailor's widow as allegory for ruined relationship?

I was never much of a Suzanne Vega fan but I bought this CD based upon hearing this song on RP. If you appreciate well crafted songs with meaningful lyrics you'll love this CD. Thanks RP!
Not too impressed with this song but the segue from Faithless was awesome.
Ah Suzanne :D 8) Vega not Vegas (pimp)
This girl is golden. I have always been in love.

Listening to Suzanne Vega sing is like watching a watchmaker build a clock--everything is precisely timed, perfectly constructed, beautifully executed, and a little sterile. There isn't a note out of place but I always end up wishing it sounded a little more human. I still like her, I just feel a little bit like wiping the machine oil from my hands after hearing her.
See her live. I've seen her about 4 times now, 3 at Glastonbury music festival and once at a gig in London. 2 of the festivals and the gig were acoustic sets. Just her, her guitar and a bassist. There was nothing automated about those performances. The most recent performance at Glasto was with a band and that rocked.
Love this CD cover to cover-some of her best work!
Discovered Vega through RP - thanks! :D Really like this song. An 8.
REALLY like this one.
Maybe a bit lit being a craftsman (craftsperson??). I've always liked her, but haven't thought about the precision component. Seems appropriate.

Huh... I can see that to a certain extent. Maybe it was because of the production of her ex husband Mitchell Froom on her last few records (not this one)? Anyway, I'd certainly agree that her stuff can be a bit overproduced. Of course, I've seen her play with just an acoustic guitar and it is stands up that way.
SO HONEST ,PURE,RESTRAINED...GREAT WORK. :D
she would have been bigger if she was a he

I disagree. Not every artist needs to sound like Courtney Love to sound "more human". It's a big world of music out there, and Suzanne needn't change a thing to fit in. Go Suzanne Vega! (I'm a big fan) :)
I have all her CD's, and I think this one is the most cohesive, one of the rare CD's I like from beginning to end.

Well expressed, L8. I like her a lot, but listening to her in large doses, like her Box Set, makes you wish she would let the sheen come off just a bit more often.

everytime I hear the begining of this I think it's "Fishing" by Widespread Panic. Am I the only one who thinks this?

I had all but forgotten about Suzanne Vega... and then along comes this song.... I give it an 8!
I put this CD on my Xmas list just because of this song. Something must have happened to SV during the 90\'s. Or she got a decent arranger.
Ahhhh, Suzanne Vega :)
You played this today at 4am. Dang - I missed it at that time. :D Wasn\'t at the computer! Can you play it again soon during daylight ours? I am at RP+3.
