Travelin' light, just you and I
A one way ticket to ecstasy
Away on down, just follow me
Travelin' light, we can go beyond
Travelin' light, now we can catch the wind
Travelin' light, just let your mind pretend
We can go to paradise
Maybe once, maybe twice
Travelin' light is the only way to fly
We can go to paradise
Maybe once, maybe twice
Travelin' light is the only way to fly
like J.J.Cale version better, sorry :)
there is j.j.cale version of this? OMG!
Interesting. Great band, but you lose that Cale sound and vibe that makes his songs come alive. Same as the Clapton covers. Can't put my finger on it without listening back to back, but Cale had a kind of magic.
I think for me it's the marching-band-cadence of the snare drum in this cover. JJ Cale had a laid-back, shuffle rhythm to a lot of his songs that made them so relaxing and enjoyable to listen to. This version is a bit more regimented and rushed sounding.
"Widespread Panic discovered a couple of my songs and started doin' 'em on the gigs. They'd take a song and expand it and everybody plays a long time and people really like that. But I made my living as a songwriter so I try to get to singin' and get it over with."
Agreed here too...+1 to 8 for the drumming...LLRP!!
I wish my hair did that... then again, if it did I'd probably hate it...
JJ Cale -> Eric Clapton -> Mark Knopfler - > Widespread Panic (and many others influenced by/covering JJ on the way and since) - for those too young to know!
Well, there is/was only one. JJ Was THE coolest guy ever. He managed to write and play cool and grovve to the max. Soooo cool.
<edit three mins later> ... and now BillG plays Eric's cover of JJ Cale's After Midnight! You da MAN, BillG!
So do I!!…..JJ Cale version much better!!
So do I!!
Drummer is earning the $

Yes I hear that, and maybe a little Dire Straits.
New -2me-music prompts urge to investigate and buy.
I have bought several hundred since finding RP... And probably will buy more.
I also play my finds around the house and in my earphones as I travel... I find conversations about music are great ways to meet people.
Some days I listen to allclassical.org from Portland for my classical fix.
Other days I may listen to WWOZ.org from New Orleans for my N.O. Jazz taste...
I always come back to RP.... Why-? Because it fits me, my work/lifestyle and it opens new ideas and artists for me.
New music to me. Chosen and played by humans who have demonstrated broadly good tastes of music from around the world and across the decades... That is a talent and ability that the machine radios do not have and cannot duplicate.
Machine radio does not care because I am source of data points not a human...
You've been reading my mail.
Incredible drummer

Are they singing about UFO's...? Orbs...?

On January 27th, Widespread Panic will play in la República Dominicana...
Widespread Panic believes that art education, and in particular music education, is integral to the overall education and advancement of children. Art allows for personal expression, appreciation of ideas, celebration of cultural awareness, sharing emotions, and gives purpose to life. Widespread Panic agrees with research findings that art education supports more traditional academic subjects as well as being a worthy pursuit in its own right.
Yeah, that's a great lesson for our kids. Paint something, then 100 years after you are dead some fool spends a fortune on your work.
Education is much more than training servants for the corporate lords. Knowing how to induce aesthetic experiences is more valuable than money!
I wonder if they teach them about the $250 million dollar Cezanne (the current record for art auction).

Wow, that's pretty bitter. Having a hard time flogging your paintings?

I think it sounds like Dire Straights with someone else singing....I prefer JJ Cale's version, tbh
+1
Maybe.
It could be seen as "travelling light, (it's just) you and me...."
Nope ... "I" is the subject.
More like Mark's father.
Clive Deamer style!
Everyone in my hotel room tremendously loves this cover...

It appears that Texans think the rules of grammar are different there, but "you and I" is right, as in "You and I are traveling light".
Maybe.
It could be seen as "travelling light, (it's just) you and me...."
Idiots. No wonder we have a generation of morons who can't construct a coherent sentence.

Think about the Traveling Wilburys!
These musicians already make the same as McDonalds and Coca Cola!
(This was a Joke)
Or Stevie Ray or Chris Isaak. It's the tone, a fairly stock setting on a Fender Stratocaster

Their earlier stuff was so uneven and inconsistent I gave up. This might make me re-consider

Totally agree. I love Cale's version the best, but this one is pretty darned good, too...

In terms of music, nobody is above nobody, and nobody knows everything, and wise is he who listens to others.
And besides, you are neither Bill nor i am not even Hispanic.
And you are not the spokesperson for anyone. As for democracy, neither go through this route unless you go Cuban dissident.
Is not my habit to make song requests. Fortunately i hear the music i want, either on radio-stations, live-shows, or in private. Everything in its place. And everything has its value and specific interest. And yes, surely, i listen to various radio-stations around the world, US, UK. EU, and if it were otherwise, would never have come to the RP. And If you do not know, i want to remind you that RP is "Listener Supported", and that exists in RP a function called "Request this song". And, again, you do not even hesitate, i appreciate the invaluable work that Bill has developed here.

Widespread Panic - Casa Del Grillo
Why this aversion to the language hispanic? Why do you flee of Hispanic songs as "devil flees from the cross"?
It adds TONS to the Cale original. TONS of superfluousness...
I'd imagine I'd like it more if I were predisposed to the whole jam band sound. 5/10.
Agree completely.

That being said, not my most favorite song on the CD...Space Wrangler is just soooo nifty!!
This is only kinda-sorta what they sound like. Not saying it's bad, but this is a band that must be experienced live.
Completely spot on. Tremendous live band.
