You should definitely check out Adele's version, which is so much more deep and emotional, unlike this unfortunate cover here that sounds dull and uninspired in comparison, stripping away almost everything and leaving only a dire rhythm with a raw washout sound.
One of the things I like about RP is hearing different versions of familiar songs. I quite like this one - a nice stripped down version.
Oh no, this cover is sub zero compared to the one by Adele...

You're right, it's not free. But paying money doesn't give anyone the right to be uncivil, rude and obnoxious as many of the people here are. For the life of me, I have no idea why some people post comments that they would never in a million years say to someone's face. That level of "discourse" doesn't help Bill and Rebecca improve the playlist, it only brands the commenter as ignorant and thus they probably get IGNORED.
For the record, I like the song.

My opinion: as with every open-source project it will get better with input and feedback, but there are some pretty harsh words being thrown about. If you think Joan missed with this one, so be it. You know, hearing Dylan sing this makes sense. Even Garth Brooks. The simple lyrics, with a deep withered voice, are haunting. With a "pretty" voice and tarted-up production, the lyrics become cheesy, like a Hallmark card.
She adds nothing to something already done. Why did she bother?

Don not forget that a HUGE part of Dylan's original was thanks to Daniel Lanois, who, by the way, had a boyhood home a few metres from I work in Gatineau (formerly Hull) Quebec. A charmant guy from a charmless town.
It's so sad that Ozzy never recognized her as his daughter. She would have been a bad ass heavy metal singer... better than Kelly.

I really detested her breakout "hit", "What If God Was One Of Us". In so many ways, that song just annoyed the heck out of me. It took me years to get around to checking other stuff of hers out, and discovering that some of it is damn good.

I love "Relish." That album is so edgy.
When did Joan stop being edgy? Because, wow, she REALLY stopped.
I don't think that this is even close to as good as Trisha Yearwood does it.

Saw her several years ago when I was travelling in India. We happened to be in Dharmshala (where the Tibetan government-in-exile is based) when they were having a benefit concert with a wide range of acts. It was pretty neat to hear her sing "One of Us" with the Dalai Lama in attendance!
So, I never really liked Joan Osborne, but I rarely dislike a good cover of this song.
Check out the Timothy B. Schmidt cover of this song. I think that he brings out the beauty of the tune....

I've been irritated with her ever since she "phoned in" a performance at a street fair in San Diego a few years ago. That said, this is very cool.
Whew...lots of negativity. I've been a big Dylan fan since the mid sixties, and this "cover" turned me on to Dylan's original. Anyway, I think Joan's version is fine, just fine.

I think part of it was the movie it was in was just awful, in my opinion; I realize many of my friends disagree. So, I was surprised when this came on, and I actually liked it! I guess you never know how much a performance affects the music until you hear a different one.

"wrote or cowrote"? So Joan scores a 74 out of 100 on the originality test? That's a relatively average score, mathematically speak its barely passing. If you're going to use those kinds of "mathematical" facts, why don't you give it some context and consider how many artist don't ever do covers?

it espesh jumps out when played back to back with another bob dylan classic makes you wonder - manfred mann, byrds covers were great because they were different from bob\'s original - joan just doesnt cut the mustard

Trisha's version is primo, blows Joan's off the map. Yearwood is one of my top vocalists.
I just heard her sing this last week as she opened for the Dixie Chicks - brilliant performance, really great interpretation of a really awesome song.

joan\'s version good --- better than garth\'s, but dylan\'s is the best! there\'s just something about his desparate, scratchy, pleading voice that makes you believe him....
I really like this song - but her version isn\'t all that great.
I was surprised find out this was Joan. The vocals do not sound like her. I like the sparseness of the sound.

Bob Dylan keeps inspiring people (from streetmusicians to pro\'s) to cover his songs. New ones too! It\'s like he dashed off this song himself and already thought of other artists, to do it in the proper way. Joan Osborne, for instance, did it very nice and sober.

I definately agree XPat. I had just put an item on my active desktop when I checked to see what RP was playing.
It was a 13th cent Bronze 1,000-Armed Kannon, Bodhisattva of Compassion (aka Chenrezik in Tibet) from the Kyoto National Museum. And there was Joan singing of love and compassion, pure and clean and fierce and gentle.
Music as a herald of enlightened culture is up to whatever is brewed up by Bush & Co.
