Yeah, her twang and her anger really make her version. Tom is merely doing an homage here, it lacks the fire of Ms. Williams' version.
I really like Lucinda's trademark "Twang" better on this song.

Yup. I'm very fond of Tom and Lucinda, but this doesn't work for me at all.
Tom's got a lot of great songs. This isn't one of them. Play Lucinda's version, pleeeeeeeease.

Wow, I really dig it. Mike Campbell's rips it up and there's a good bit of random "hoa!-ing" What's not to like?

I love Tom Petty, but this is awful.

Try not to blame Tom for the way the NFL is - a group which at heart is a very close-fisted, reactionary group of yah-boh marketeers. ... the NFL makes Wal-Mart look like Albert Schweitzer sometimes they're so capitalistic.
Oh ... does that bring me back.
I grew up as an American overseas ... (S. America) ... and NFL managed to get the SuperBowl broadcast overseas for many years (I don't know if they're still doing it).
For many people around the world, it is the only American Football game they see. (Nevermind the hilarity of hearing some comentator trying to explain the rules).
But I'll never forget the *dread* each year at the half-time shows ... this was our export to the world ... a glimpse into what live entertainment looked like in America?
1976 - Up With People: "A Tribute to America's Bicentennial"
1977 - "It's a small world"(incl. Audience card stunt)
'Up With People' played the SuperBowl four times: in 1976, 1980, 1982, 1986
Between that and the Oscars ... hoo boy, can we throw a show, or what?
All right, I get it
He's just not that into you

Prefer Lucinda; she adds a lot more bite to it.

Reminds me of something once written about Lucinda: Just because she pronounces poetry "portry" doesn't make it less poetic.

Amen!

Never have liked this guy - very average musically. Never have understood how he got to be so popular and considered classic...

Yeah there is that. But Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are one HECKUVA lot nicer to have at the halftime of the Super Bowl than those awful years of 'Up With People!'
Try not to blame Tom for the way the NFL is - a group which at heart is a very close-fisted, reactionary group of yah-boh marketeers. Always enjoyed the way Hunter Thompson 'Dr. Gonzo-ed' the crap of them in his time. We need more of that - the NFL makes Wal-Mart look like Albert Schweitzer sometimes they're so capitalistic.
Tom Petty is pretty darn good if I might say so - and I just did! This track isn't close to my favorite, but Mr. Petty is not a BS rock star like some.
If any of you get a chance see the documentary on him, 'Runnin' Down a Dream', that Peter Bogdanovich just did last year. 3 1/2 hours long, but if you're interested at all (or maybe even if you aren't) in the music business, it's a fascinating 210 minutes.

How would you know that it's Tom Petty then?!? For the record: I've always enjoyed Tom Petty's music quite a bit.

HA! .. can't believe never heard this B4 .. great song!
just recently reviewed the Petty discography.
unbefuckinleivable.
this guy is prodigious. a hall o famer!
sorry, to have never heard lou dub's version, but glad that i never had to "learn" to love this song knowing it was a cover. i hope to avoid the original and remain blind and convinced that dr. petty wrote this song. ignorance is bliss?
nice original dr.
Pitiful what's become of him.
I heard an interview of Tom on PBS. He told a story about how his house was burnt down in the middle of the night with his family in it. It was done by some insane groupie. Maybe this song could apply to that experience.

this sounds kinda stupid form a male's perspective..but maybe it's because I love the origianl version ??
Tom does rock out on it though
A key rule of covers is 'make it your own'. I really like TP, but he didn't make this one his own 'cause all I hear is LW's version.
Now, in my head I can hear TP playing this live and rockin' it big time.
Art_Carnage wrote:
Doesn't hold a candle to Lucinda's version.
Correct.
I like Cake's cover, though.
Nabla wrote:
Hm. Has that vaguely plasticy plastic surgery look men get when they get it. Did TP go under the knife?
Wow. He really doesn't want to see her again.
Nobody's guitars or vocals could prop up the inherent flaccidity in Lucinda Williams' songwriting.
jdpinball wrote:

exactly...and his delivery doesn't come close to the passion/anger in Lucinda's version.
Once upon a time he was able to invest his songs with anger and angst - like in fooled again - but now he wades into this song like it's tepid bathwater.
TP has really slipped in my humble opinion . . .

Good thing you don't live in the South! (I'm not fond of that pronunciation either, and I live there!)
The perfect combination IMHO would be Lucinda singing over Tom's grinding guitar....

Kick ass cover. Tear it up Tommy.

I am of the opinion that if you can't add something to the song - then leave it alone. Lady Lu owns this song, and Petty just waters it down.
Word.

Most bourbon straight from the cask is some evil stuff; it burns like fire going down and usually elicits the "slam the glass back to the table and shudder" response. But, add just the right amount of clear water and suddenly you've got something completely different; subtle but strong, a cohesive palate with lovely hints of flavor here and there to really make it interesting.
You're right; Tom Petty waters this down.

Likewise... didn't know it was a cover.

Yeah, Tom's voice just isn't grating enough to give that extra edge. His voice is just too good.

Agree. A bit week in comparison. He's just not pissed enough.
Great segue behind "Come On".
I can't think of a more perfect person to cover Lucinda. He really nails her, doesn't he...musically speaking, of course...
This is okay but it just doesn't have the "kick" that Lucinda's original has.
rock on, Tom, rock on
I've heard much better than this from Petty. I see it's a Lucinda Williams song.
Hmm.

Lucinda's is a better version...more passionate vocals. IMHO
He doesn't sound at all twangy compared to Lucinda. Then again neither does Goober.

One of the few Petty songs I like.
Understated but powerful.
Oh, I see, it's a Lucinda cover.
That explains it...
Love the lyrics. Never heard the original though.
Wow, he's going to great lengths to keep this person away. Sounds like me. Heh!
Tricky Bill, first Lucinda, then a cover of Lucinda.
I just acquired this CD and its pretty good. It's like the lost tracks CD. You will never hear anything off of it unless you see the movie or listen to RP.
I'm a huge fan of Tom Petty, and registered myself on this site just to write this comment. Been a long time listener (and a supporter during the past few months) of RP - my hat goes off to any radio station that digs up gems like this from underrated albums such as this one. RP stands alone in this elite group of radio stations.
snore.
I like the heavy sound of this.
Save Radio Paradise.... but can this song! It sucks!
i think lucinda does her own song better.....
WOW!
I changed the lock on my front door
So you can't see me anymore
And you can't come inside my house
And you can't lie down on my couch
I changed the lock on my front door
And I changed the number on my phone
So you can't call me up at home
And you can't say those things to me
That make me fall down on my knees
I changed the number on my phone
'Cause I changed the kind of car I drive
So you can't see me when I go by
And you can't chase me up the street
And you can't knock me off of my feet
I changed the kind of car I drive
Look out
I changed the kind of clothes I wear
So you can't find me anywhere
You can't spot me in a crowd
And you can't call my name out loud
I changed the kind of clothes I wear
I changed the tracks underneath the train
So you can't find me ever again
And you can't trace my path
And you can't hear me laugh
And honey, I'm laughin' all the time
Oh, that's right
All together, listen
Yeah, all
Come on, come on
You know that's right
I changed the name of this town
So you can't follow me down
And you can't touch me like before
And you can't make me want you more
I changed the name of this town
I changed the lock on my front door
I changed the number on my phone
I changed the kind of car I drive
I changed the kind of clothes I wear
I changed the tracks underneath the train
I changed the name of this town
I changed the name of this town
I changed the name of this town
Oh, yeah
Yeah, you know that's right, baby
Get it, guitar
Now you know that's right
Yeah, you know that's right, baby
You know it's alright
You know, now you know that's right
Yeah, you know that's right
You know, woah
You know, yeah
