So, she says it's time she goes
But wanted to be sure I know
She hopes we can be friends
I think, yeah, I guess we can say I
But didn't think to ask her why
She blocked her eyes and drew the curtains
With knots I've got yet to untie

What if I were Romeo in black jeans
What if I was Heathcliff, it's no myth
Maybe she's just looking for
Someone to dance with

See, it was just too soon to tell
And looking for some parallel
Can be an endless game
We, we said goodbye before hello
My secrets she will never know
And if I dig a hole to China
I'll catch the first junk to Soho

What if I were Romeo in black jeans
What if I was Heathcliff, it's no myth
Maybe she's just looking for
Someone to dance with

Sometime from now you'll bow to pressure
Some things in life you cannot measure by degrees
I'm between the poles and the equator
Don't send no private investigator to find me please
'Less he speaks Chinese
And can dance like Astaire overseas
Okay

What if I was
So, what if I was
Maybe she's just looking for
Someone to dance with

What if I was Romeo in black jeans
What if I was Heathcliff, it's no myth
Maybe she's just looking for
Someone to dance with

The song reminds me of the end of 1989 when I was 25 years old and the man I passionately loved told me he didn't feel the same way. Not long after, he met the woman who would be come his wife.

When I look back, I feel such tender affection for the young woman I was.

I also found this on ebay in the form of a promotional cd they released to promote the original album. Pretty rare, but it's out there...
I really love this version of the song -- enough that I learned how to play it on guitar.  One of the first songs I learned that wasn't just a simple chord progression.

I love this!

I loved Michael Penn when this came out… Super talented song writer.

I would not say his talent went to waste. He gave us a great album and we are grateful.

Definitely has a Crowded House Vibe.

Michael Penn released a new single two weeks ago. Both the song and the video are absolutely amazing. Please take a look on YouTube by searching "michael penn revival"

Great segue from El Mountain by Gaye Delorme!
It'd be interesting to also play the original non-acoustic version once in a while.   This is a great track though.

Likely the same Heathcliff that Kate Bush was referring to in her song "Wuthering Heights", which is from the novel of the same name.  As ziggytrix posted earlier, it's probably not the cartoon, orange tabby.

Of the top two Google results for Heathcliff, I'd guess its the OTHER one... but I might be wrong!

Yes! It's not on March. I'd pay good money for a mp3 of this song.
Who or what is Heathcliff referring to?
This entire record is fantastic in my opinion.

There's a lot of Beatles influence in his music.
I heard "What if I rodeoed in black jeans?". Not a problem at all...
i love this song!

Sheesh, to me he drained the life right out of the original. 'BUM bumbum bumbum bumbum...'

It might be "It's Only Love"; this song has a C - Am phrase which is also used in the intro to that song.  It's a standard, harmonic progression.
has Romeo in Black Jeans done anything since?

Good song and interesting version.  Funny: I'm usually a fan of stripping away production in favor of a more open sound.  This, when compared with the original version, reminds me that really strong production can really "make" a pop song.

And there's nothing wrong with that.

I've often agreed with your point of view, except for Layla...but this I kind of like ...
Ahhhhh, spring and summer of 1990. Good times. Lots of good times and some sad ones, with this clever little song as accompaniment.
So. Good.

The wrong cover art displayed shouldn't annoy me when this version comes on...but it does...and I don't have the correct one to offer. I suppose I should find more important things to annoy oneself, huh?
I forgot how much I like this song...  {#Daisy}
Interesting the previous comment, last time this song followed Florence and the Machine, whose histrionic yodeling seems specific to whatever she is trippin on .... followed by a much more accessible artist, in a universal sense. Maybe Tori Amos On Steroids is a demographic now.

If I remember correctly, the original radio version of this song was a demo that Michael Penn made himself.

Lucky guy!
I saw Michael Penn at a free concert in San Francisco back when this was popular.
It was great.

This was a really good album with a lot of good songs on it...
I believe Michael wonbest new musician of the year at the time it came out.
Unfortunately, nothing came after...sad.  Such potential!
Whoa, major flashback.
Heard this a gazillion times, 20 years ago, but not since. Yes, acoustic.
Nice.
I'm probably good for another 5 years or so.

Hard to believe that it's almost as many years (22) from this album till now as it is from Rubber Soul (the previous track) to this album (24 years).

His brother is a huge star and his woman is a better songwriter than he.  But this is a good tune.

I also like Michael and Aimee's version of Two of Us from the I Am Sam soundtrack

sure do love to dance

"Romeo in black jeans"--yeah, I get it, and I would like to like Michael Penn, but the vocal quality says to me, "Ah, whatthehell, better sing before I fall asleep."
Though I prefer the original this is still damn good. Just a great song any way you slice it up.
I love you for playing this song.
This song is still good. There needs to be more acoustic sounding songs like this out there...
I agree, I miss the original's energy. I have the original on 90s collection, too.
The strumming gets on my nerves and so does the singing. When I have to turn is off it gets an automatic 1. It completely rubs me the wrong way. Just not my thing I guess.
