A moment of steel
A dry-eyed house
Did he say goodbye to you
Or did you kick him out
I know you're not afraid
To go alone
But this was a marriage of spirit, flesh, and bone
Now whatcha gonna do
When the planet shifts
Whatcha gonna do
Gonna slit your wrists
And bleed all over the Milky Way
The stars in your eyes look red today
Cry love, cry love
The tears of an angel
The tears of a dove
Spilling all over, your heart from above
Cry love, cry love
The trust of a woman in his hand
But he was a little boy, not a man
You loved him stronger than he could feel
Yeah he was wrapped up in himself like an orange peel
Now whatcha gonna do
With the booze and the blush
Whatcha gonna do
When there's no rush
Cop a little misery
At the corner store
Well one day that train of pain won't stop no more
Cry love, cry love
The tears of an angel
The tears of a dove
Spilling all over, your heart from above
Cry love, cry love
Throwing up ashes on the floor
If this is a lesson in love
Well what's it for?
The heart will remember
The burning fire
The next time you feel the flame of desire
Cry love, cry love
The tears of an angel
The tears of a dove
Spilling all over, your heart from above
Cry love, cry love
Cry love, cry love
The tears of an angel
The tears of a dove
Spilling all over, your heart from above
Cry love, cry love

Listening via Alexa and caught this song today. SO GOOD to hear Hiatt and one of my favorites of his.
Good album, one of his best.
This is not a good song. Please stop playing it.

Somewhere, redbill is gnashing his teeth...
OK, but he's done much better.
Some people are PSD; they wouldn't know a great singer-songwriter if it slapped them in the face. This is an incredibly energizing fabulous song! Thank you Bill 4 making life so wonderful with your radio station. Life just wouldn't be the same without it

Yes, I've seen him live at least a half a dozen times - with some awesome backing bands including Sonny Landreth, The Mississippi Allstars to name a few. Terrific shows all.
To me, rather than "over-singing" I see an artist that puts his heart and soul into every performance.

Thank goodness John Hiatt, one of America's greatest singer songwriters, isn't as weak minded as some.

Interesting descriptions, although 'just glad to be there' doesn't seem much like Guy Clark. He has absolutely nothing to prove, not even with, in fact ESPECIALLY with, those other guys. I love 'em all, but honestly I think Guy Clark is the best songwriter of those four.
c.
WOOT! I love this!
I worked sound check at the Hollywood Bowl back when John was opening for Graham Parker and the Rumor. At the time, he was the quintessential angst ridden and over-the-top quirky, angry young man. Check out his excellent early 80's albums Two Bit Monsters and All Of A Sudden.
From "This Secret Life"
I dreamed I was being kept alive
To bear the brunt of a family joke
About which no one spoke

Man! What a great line up! I've always loved John Hiatt, having seen him on several occassions both solo and with band, but special mention has to be made for Lyle Lovett. I've seen hundreds of concerts in my lifetime but Lyle Lovett & His Big Band was one of the top 5 shows ever! I saw them in an old theater in Hanford, CA and I watched slacked-jawed at how polished and professional they were. It was a history of American Music! Every genre....Big Band, Soul, Rhythm & Blues, Gospel, Country, Rock, Jazz, Swing, Cajun....etc. etc. was performed so masterfully. And he played instant requests from the audience. How many 20 piece bands can do that without missing a note? Absolutely awesome!!!

This song is so corny. Is this taken from a bad movie? Bryan Adams, John Mellencamp...it's all the same lame tune.
not that good...

This is a good track. I first encountered John Hiatt when he was part of Ry Cooder's road band in the early 80s. At some point in what was already a very great show, Hiatt took the lead vocal on what I believe was an old R&B song called "Are You Lonely for me Baby" and shook the house down. I'll never forget it.
My favorite John Hiatt sing, largely b/c of the mandolin.
