Started listening to The Beatles after John was shot. I was 11 and a half. When The John Lennon Collection came out in 82 I got it on cassette for Chanukah.  I played the hell out of that cassette for the next 5 years. I might never have encountered this later Lennon stuff without it.

This song is me, aged 14, lying in bed, singing myself to sleep.

Yes is the answer.

In this time of insanity, nuclear radiation, wars and tanking economy, I appreciate John Lennon's music a LOT more these days.  He was a sort of visionary - and it's not like he was complaining about the world situation and not doing anything about it. He offered solutions to big problems. Granted, his solutions seemed pretty unorthodox at the time, but now, I wonder how much of "Give peace a chance" could actually be what saves the world from itself?  I miss his optimism and his snarky-but-dead-on humor.

I know what you mean, but it's easy to make such a broad assumption.  I don't personally find "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da", "Run For Your Life", "Bungalo Bill", or "Love Me Do" (as random examples) to be better than this song.

I rated this lower because when I was just listening to it, it seemed that for John (my favorite Beatle) this was just a commercial song — sell a few records, pay a few bills.  I didn't think tha tthere was sincere emotion behind the words.  But he still gets a 9 on almost all other songs.

"Merry Xmas Everybody" is a single released  in December 1973 by the english glam rock Band "Slade" and recorded in New York in mid 1973, in an adjoining studio, where John Lennon was working on his album Mind Games;  Slade and manager/producer Chas Chandler experimented some dificultyes in this theme, and John Lennon give help, turned up with a harmonium he was about to use in the studio next door;  "Merry Xmas Everybody" probably one of best obtained and famous songs of Christmas, probably.....

note: i have this song enclosed in a Compilation of the Band "Slade" and i would like to hear this song here in RP Station, but i am not very made familiar to the correct procedures of uploads, if somebody will be interested and can give an aid... ty;

I read somewhere that the lyric could have been 'Make love, not war' But Lennon only sang this line in the run out groove, and sang 'Mind games together/forever' instead. I think the song would be heard a lot more if he had used the anti-war message; well it would be heard a lot more in countries that oppose war, anyway.
