Come here sister.....Papa's in the swing
He ain't too hip...about that new breed thing
He ain't no drag
Papa's got a brand new bag
Come here mama....and dig this crazy scene
He's not too fancy....but his line is pretty clean
He ain't no drag.
Papa's got a brand new bag
He's doing the Jerk....
He's doing the Fly
Don't play him cheap 'cause you know he ain't shy
He's doing the Monkey, the Mashed Potatoes, Jump back Jack, See you later
Alligator.
Come here sister
Papa's in the swing
He ain't too hip now
But I can dig the new breed thing;
He ain't no drag
He's got a brand new bag
Oh papa! He's doing the Jerk
Papa...he's doing the Jerk
He's doing the twist ... just like this,
He's doing the Fly ev'ry day and ev'ry night
And the thing....like the Boomerang.
Hey....come on
Hey! Hey.....come on
Hey! Hey....says he's uptight...he's out of sight...
Come on. See whatcha know. Come on.

Forever reminds me of my impeccably hip elementary school buddy Roderick G, who could not only do the moves of JB and MJ (who was already famous by our age!), but got me doing them, too -- often, in the hallway or on the stairs, and it'd get us scolded by the stodgy nuns at school. The cool ones let us rip, though!

Can we find the steps for the great dances Mr JB is referring to. The Jerk, Fly, Monkey, Mashed Potato and Boomerang?

So funky ... so tight
I purchased James Brown plays James Brown where he does instrumental covers of his stuff. 1965 mono pressing. I did not know he played the organ. He does Parts 1 and 2 of this cut.

Just saw the documentary "Mr. Dynamite".
Really, really good.
Highly recommended to anyone even slightly interested in James Brown or that era of musical history.

Nice....
Listen to some traditional "African" music, and then American "soul" music, and then see which one JB is most like. Hint: it's the former. If you had to pick an American artist that's a real embodiment of African music, it's the Godfather of Soul.

Back in law school, one of my classmates did a parody of a law review symposium issue. Among the papers presented at the mythical "Jurisprudence and James Brown" confab was "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag, But Can It Be Searched? The Fourth Amendment Decisions of the Rhenquist Court."
Yay! (growling) "Hey babe; wanna dance?"
More great music from this era Bill. Thanks!
This song is still soooo good for the ears...

I vote "no" - it would eliminate thousands of good tunes. You're just resentful because none of your songs have ever been used to sell a product, not even that Dippity-Doo® jingle.

Hey I know lets take a vote, once a song has been used to sell a product it no longer qualifies for play. I vote yes.

My seven year old son just came in and announced to me that "this song is in Mrs. Doubtfire!"
I told him that this was James Brown, the Godfather of Soul. Hopefully he will remember this.
I am proud that my son can recognize Bob Marley songs, Grateful Dead, and now hopefully James Brown. Thanks, RP for being the sound track of my son's musical education (as well as Mrs. Doubtfire of course!).

You can't just drop a bombshell like that one and leave it! Give us details!!!
Let's just say it was of a religious nature and we discussed Jesus. He was interested in talking about his life and directions it had taken and people he has known over the years, like Gladys Knight, and repentance, and prayer. Sorry it can't be crazier, but it was mostly me listening.

I never find myself saying "Hey, I'm gonna listen to some JB!!" This song reminds me that I should. : )

I have inspected his house several times in the past for insurance, and he drunk dialed me once. That was an interesting conversation.

That would make for a pretty short playlist (sadly).
It would eliminate the majority of The Beatles' catalog, for starters.

Encounter your kids with JB as young as possible and they will move correctly and smoothly all of their life: JB is good for your health!

Hott-ah!!
Simply a phenomenon..........
Do the funky chicken!!
I give it an 8 because it's just part 1. The full-length version gets a 9 or 10 from me.
More, please. More JAAAAAAAAAAAAMES BROWN!!
Here he is, The Man himself. All others are but imitators.
Oh, for the days of walking down the beach with this blasting out of the little transistor radio I bought at the dime store . . .
