Is it getting better?
Or do you feel the same?
Will it make it easier on you, now
You got someone to blame
You say one love, one life
When it's one need, in the night
One love, we get to share it
It leaves you, baby, if you don't care for it

Did I disappoint you?
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth?
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without
Well, it's too late, tonight
To drag the past out into the light
We're one, but we're not the same
We get to carry each other, carry each other
One...

Have you come here for forgiveness
Have you come to raise the dead
Have you come here to play Jesus
To the lepers in your head
Did I ask too much, more than a lot
You gave me nothing, now it's all I got
We're one, but we're not the same
Well, we hurt each other
Then we do it again.

You say love is a temple, love a higher law
Love is a temple, love the higher law
You ask me to enter, but then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on, to what you got
When all you got is hurt

One love, one blood
One life, you got to do what you should
One life with each other: sisters, brothers
One life, but we're not the same
We get to carry each other, carry each other.
One (lone)
One...

Make in it, make in it, higher...

Johny Cash does an excellent version of this song

I find that Acting Baby was the continuation of U2’s decline into pretentiousness and mediocrity that started with Rattle and Hum.  Some good songs on both.  For me, One is a major misfire. Just boring.  Oh well.  To each his own.

GREAT TUNE!!    ...sometimes greatness ages very well!  ...as in this tune!
GORGEOUS. Only „Running to stand still“ moves me as this masterpiece does.
Just a reminder to choose to be kind to one another folks.  It's not hard and the results are better for everyone.
Great song and album like all their previous albums and a few tracks  afterwards. It's good and then that's it, it's my adolescence and I don't like how this group has aged, but that's another story....

Since my college days were in the middle 70's, comments like this make me smile. We all have those moments, and some of us more than one.

You only live once and we make many bad choices during that lifetime. Do not linger with regrets; recognize your bad choices, give them the respect they deserve, be thankful that they did not destroy your life, ... then embrace your future.
Just sublime and a band at their peak (even though I'm more of a Joshua Tree/Unforgettable Fire guy).
Through the test of time, this is my favourite U2 song :)
Excellent!
This is an example of why this band is so loved (and possibly, so hated too), tapping into some primal aspect of human experience in both a new and yet familiar way. Evoking emotions and a sense of connection.
Are they flawed? Obviously, just like you and I, and they know that, and that's part of the appeal.
An absolutely genius musical composition. The way all the layers join up is astounding... And, IT REALLY ROCKS WHEN CRANKED!

This beautiful, uncomfortable lesson of a song reminds me of thoughtless inconsideration and hits too close for me to be able to listen, even now.
Great track. One of my favourite albums of all time. Really dig it.

U2 re-recorded the song as part of a duet with R&B recording artist Mary J. Blige on her album The Breakthrough. This blew me away and made me gain deeper respect to Mary J. Blige.

Same, but for me it was "With or without you."
Probably U2's best song, and one of the best songs ever.
If only U2 had a guitar player. Edge is the Stu Sutcliff of modern stage props.
Last week when hearing this it applied to missing my lovely wife for 2 months as she's taking care of her dad when he recovers.

This week it's missing my dear grandmother and best friend who passed away this weekend 3 months shy of 100 years old.

True telling of a great song-it can connect to anything at anytime, and move you every time.
You ask me to enter, but then you make me crawl
IMHO, their best album; slagged by the critics; there you go, ho hum!

songs ratings on RP ?!
I prefer the original Johnny Cash version. What?
This song saved my marriage years ago. The line, "We've got to carry each other," hit me like a brick as I walked through the living room while our son was watching U2 perform this song on an awards show.
This is a GREAT song ... and somehow the Mary J Blige version is even better.
I don't usually like U2, except this One!
My favourite U2 album
I remember playing this newly purchased CD as a sound check on big playback setup for a movie in Prague in 1991...blew everyone away.

Whatever it will be, one thing will never change. One will always  sing to the other: "We're one but we 're not the same.".

Our you mentally activate the bio-luminescent layer underneath your fingernails to glow in the dark so you can just "wave your hands in the air like you just don't care."
Funny, when it's just U2, I give it a 5ish. But with Mary J. Blige, it's a totally different song, with a special vibrancy and passion--and I give that version a 9 :)
One of my favorite songs by u2 besides Sunday Bloody Sunday
Worth checking out the Cowboy Junkies cover of One on their 21st Century Blues album.

Hm. I think he does have a point there. I like U2, and I like this song very much. But I have to agree, there's something of what dennis_chary says in many U2-songs. A sort of trying-too-hard. Never heard it before, but now I can't unhear it. Maybe it's something to do with that album, I don't hear it as much in songs from Joshua Tree.

one of the best U2 song imho and way better than anything they have churned out recently. 9 from me.

Strong 8 tending to 9. One of Bono’s best, but the Mary J Blige version with Bono is a 10

Agreed.  This is a terrific song.

I think U2 is a fabulous band and Bono's vocals really do seal the deal.

Some of the song structure is so simple but is SO well done.

U2 does most things right and they are from my generation....not sure why I don't like them that much. I just have a 'meh' reaction to their music. I do appreciate their War album though. Some good solid tracks on that one.

Even though that's one of the rare U2 songs I'm not keen on (heard too much?... especially on French radios, where it's the only one played daily), for some reason I don't feel like PSD/muting it because it fits so well in RP's playlist, and removing it would paradoxically create a miss.

Imho the song is about trying to face the pain of not only a relationship, but a world if division and strife in humanity.
The overall message is to keep trying to love and to mend/heal/ over come the pain we cause each other.

Love that causes pain is not love it's longing. It's best to let it go if it hurts.

Did I disappoint you?
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth?
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without
Well it's too late tonight
To drag the past out into the light...

That sounds like something pretty specific, and not very loving. (He wants it, she doesn't.)

Did I ask too much?
More than a lot.
You gave me nothing,
Now it's all I got

And, we hurt each other then we do it again...

I can't be holding on to what you got
When all you got is hurt

I like the song...I like the tune, but as I said, the lyrics, to me...well. This is no love song as far as I can tell...

Right—to me this is very painful, and beautifully written song about a breakup. Though I never thought it was about sex per se. I think it is a superb song, but it always makes me sad. The lyrics expand to cover "one world" etc at the end, but....
Best song ever!
Great lyric. Great song.
