George Wein-Festival Network saga continues

As impresario George Wein and his team continue preparing for two festivals under his own name in Newport this summer because of the anticipated demise of Festival Network LLC, the venture that bought out his Festival Productions Inc. operation two years ago and ran things into the ground quite quickly in 2008.

With FN out of the picture, at least as far as the State of Rhode Island is concerned, Wein is preparing for his own events, being called "George Wein's Folk Festival 50" and "George Wein's Jazz Festival 55," since FN bought the rights to the names of his venerable Newport Jazz Festival and Newport Folk Festival.

While Festival Network hasn’t officially folded it’s tent, the calendar is working against any serious effort for it to produce festivals this year - anywhere.

Wein has made it clear that his focus is Newport, in order to preserve the birthplace of his festival legacy in July 1954. He has said he won’t put on a similar jazz festival in New York this June, telling the New York Times' Ben Sisario this week: “I’m not necessary in New York. New York’s a jazz festival all year long.” Nor has JVC indicated it will sponsor festivals anywhere. Apparently the Japanese economy is as just as bad as ours.

However, Wein is producing two Diana Krall concerts at Carnegie Hall on June 23 and 24 - and according to a news release from his office this week, he will produce a series of additional concerts in New York in June. Publicist Carolyn McClair said New York and Newport artists will be announced in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, Festival Network CEO Chris Shields, likely the company’s only remaining “employee,” continues to issue statements thanking Wein for laying the ground for his outfit’s return to Newport. That’s not likely.

Shows are getting smaller. Bad for the music Business, but great for Music. IMO. Bands are having to rely more on their ability to perform rather than how flashy a record the label can produce. Indies are making a comeback.

And everyone I know who has attended the "Big" Festivals, Had been complaining about them getting way too big and over-crowded.

This one was the first in Jackson so the crowd was "good but not insane"... it was a good weekend.

Promoter Festival Network faces huge losses, lays off staffers

By Bob Grossweiner & Jane Cohen

Concert and festival promoter Festival Network LLC is in financial straits and is believed to have lost $5 million to $6 million in 2008, TicketNews has learned. The company, which hosts festivals in upscale locales such as Newport, RI, Saratoga, NY and Jackson Hole, WY, has closed offices, laid off an undisclosed number of employees and may shut down several of its signature festivals due in part to difficulty in raising new capital and a cutback in funding from JVC for jazz shows.

This is a crap photo but I just wanted to show you what you get with a Robert Randolph & the Family Band concert: 3 pedal steels, a solid funk band backing it up and 100% party time. He started in church, moved out into the "Sacred Steel" scene, and is now a fun rock show. Don't miss it if he comes to your town.

I forgot to mention that I felt a little guilty: His own stuff rocked but oh. my. god you should have heard his tribute to Bo Diddley. :swoon:

He really is. I bumped into him at a bar later that night. Super nice.

I was backstage before the show and I saw a guy in a wheelchair with a steel right outside the gate. the guy was a big fan so they let him in to talk to Robert.
Later, during the show, the band wanted to get the guy on stage to play with them. the steps on the back of the stage were too steep to prop some boards and roll the guy up. the show stopped for a few minutes while members of the band tried to lift this guy, wheelchair and all up on the front of the stage. It made me nervous to watch as they tried to hoist him up. they couldn't do it. so the guy just parked it right in front of the stage and jammed with the band. it was pretty cool.

It was weird. First she had a paragraph about a Jackson motel, how great it is etc etc, then a link to a Wyoming drug rehab program.

Gotta love amateur spammers. She was probably thinking "Crap I got this job promoting the motel in online forums. Maybe if I could kick the meth I could get a real job." and then accidentally pasted the wrong link or something.
