For me, its the solid bass line, with the "muscality" on top. 
That lead guitar just  floating along... this is (IMO) a great piece of music.

One of my lifes greatest regrets, missing the Alchemy tour when they played in Sydney in 1986....if only we had time machines...

Dylan and Dire Straits....when you go back, its like hearing them for the first time again and you feel youve been unfaithful!

Yup 1978 first heard Sultans of Swing, privileged to see them live at Cardiff Arms Park around 1991.

Even more perplexing is that I also have been listening to them for forty years and never saw them live.  I rectified that egregious error last October.  The most I ever paid for a ticket; well worth it.  I could not take the smile off my face, and many times felt shrill energy up my back.  Mark is the best.

Agreed. Love tracks like this, where the groove takes time to develops.
Rarely does the same artist get played here back-to-back, and I get it that we are on a nautical theme.  Still, Mark Knopfler is the finest musician representing rock and roll in the present. Getting older at 64, veteran of many, many concerts, appreciative of many genres of music, I am cognizant over time of the zenith point Knopfler has risen to.  
All these years I thought the lyric was "All day long they been slaughtering upon a stoat".  Then I'd wonder, given the small size of a stoat, why would it take all day?  This is what can happen when you're too lazy to look up the lyrics.

I never heard this song until just now. I used to grumble as a kid about Dire Straits not playing harder stuff but as you get older you appreciate subtlety, restraint, intimation and the space between the notes. How 'bout that Knopfler!

I just love the sound of the sea at the start and end of these tracks - so beautiful, so restful, and great at setting the scene for the songs. Elegaic. 8 from the Zenned-out Nottingham jury.

I lean toward bb_matt's comment below, from the comments for "Single Handed Sailor." My guess is that Knopfler felt pressured to put out arena rock songs for Love Over Gold and Brothers in Arms. Both albums have great songs, but overall the earlier albums are more intimate and jazzier....


Bill and Rebecca--any chance, any chance at all that you'll implement threaded conversations in the song comments sections?

Guess when one starts out good, the further efforts that are merely "good" go unnoticed.  One must then be "great" every time... Besides being impossible to pu out an album of only great" music...That would then become the standard... How easily we become bored and complacent...


First time in my decade or more of listening to RP that Bill has played two tracks back to back from the same artist, even the same album. What is going on, has the election gotten to him?
