I used to hear this often while tending my plants on weekend afternoons at my hill-top penthouse in Setagaya-ku, the best part of Tokyo, from where I could spy the distant snow-cone of Fuji-san as well as down-town views from Roppongi to Haneda, and now, remarkably, it seems to catch me on weekend afternoons as I tend my window-plants at my latest lofty perch in Boulder, from where I can take in The Front Range from The Flatirons and The Divide to the west and north into Wyoming... RP and Mr. Buckley connect me to the church of my life's scenery!

Bill has been my personal oracle since that very  first day I listened in 2007 and he played Ray Lamontagne’s Til the Sun Turns Black and Elbow’s The Seldom Seen Kid which in retrospect were obvious and immortal but then he also spun Mooncake’s Nine Billion Names and TV on the Radio’s Family Tree and My morning Jacket’s The Way that he Sings and Death Cab’s Transatlanticism  and all of these songs became inalienable aspects of my musical soul … and this particular song had always been a Bill favorite and was one of the rare songs that he consistently played that did nothing for me… in fact for years Buckley père sounded like a drunk uncle doing karaoke at a wedding, or maybe more like a drunk uncle, or possibly even myself, getting hammered in the basement and singing way too loud for the rest of us…but goddamn… now I get it it. And I wish I didn’t…god I wish I didn’t… but every last word of this song is magic…and also a truth I never, ever, ever wanted to live…but the moral of the story? Bill is the only algorithm that matters at all…Bill is the friend I always wanted to have to share music with but never did…but he is about as close to infallible as a man can be…and believe me, I know that de gustibus non disputandum est…and so on. Thank you, Bill. Thank you for being the friend I never had.

This great song always takes me back to watering and lingering among my lush bowers of plants on my balconies with views of Fuji-san and Shinjuku, at my place in Setagaya-ku, Tokyo, from 2002-12, before the Japanese Govt. Line of "Don't worry, it's a safe level of Radiation," chased me out of there, for it seemed as if this used to play every weekend as I puttered out there with sliding doors open.
