In the fine print they tell me what's wrong and what's right
And it comes in black and it comes in white
And I'm frightened by those who don't see it
When nothing is owed, deserved or expected
And your life doesn't change by the man that's elected
If you're loved by someone you're never rejected
Decide what to be and go be it.
There was a dream
One day I could see it
Like a bird in a cage I broke in and demanded that somebody free it
And there was a kid, with a head full of doubt
So I scream til I die or the last of those bad thoughts are finally out
There's a darkness upon you that's flooded in light
In the fine print they tell you what's wrong and what's right
And it flies by day and it flies by night
And I'm frightened by those who don't see it
Lyrics: OK. Melody: Meh. Vocals: Ack. : (

Edited to say: I hate this song so much that I keep forgetting I've already rated it low and commented several times about it. Oops. This is not normal for me, I can't think of another song I feel so strongly about.
Came here to find another living soul that feels this way. HATE this song. It feels so, "you all are sheep, you're all so deluded, I'm so aware and you all "scare" me because you aren't as smart and aware as me." The kind of guys that vote third party and look down on everyone else.
I don't like to dismiss songs, but this one seems formulaic. It's almost laid out as a step by step production. Earnest yet shallow. I hope this is not seen as condescending, since those who write songs and perform them are doing this because they believe in the outcome. But, honestly, this particular very popular piece rubs me the way a sharp grater works a piece of ginger. Yep: dinner time.

.. some Greek dude.
Agreed, they are great and the live shows are UNBELIEVABLE.
Because the Mumfords are pretensious and you hear that. A moderator of my fasvorite radio satiom Radioeins called it "Stadium Folk". That's it.
Well why not you yourself, pal? Don't wanna get your hands dirty?
Everyone is an activist these days...
"Everyone is an activist these days..."
Nah, there's a lot more MAGA jerks ... like you?
Now that I have had a few beers she sure looks purdy an all.
What do you mean? She is every bit as good a model as Neil is a singer...

Good description.

Avett Bros. defy all labels........!!!
i must say i agree with your opinion, good song, bad album cover art
I think it's actually a very well-executed painting on that cover - skillful use of light and shadow. Whether or not it makes for a good album cover is another matter.

Love reading the comments section.
How do you know what you sound like when you're drunk? Got a YouTude or Vimeo?
lol; I'm glad I don't sound like that when I've been drinking.
Love reading the comments section.
Yep, still this Set. Nice progression though. These guys sound like 'Fun' to me

It's not your fault.
Me neither. But what does that have to do with this song?
Thanks man.

Perhaps "Decide what you would like to be and try your damnedest to be it, but if it doesn't work out don't beat yourself up because life is difficult enough so just be content that you gave it the old college try and hey you're only human so crack a cold brewski take a deep breath and enjoy life's short but rich pageant" would have been more appropriate, if less succinct, and probably more difficult to set to music.
I think Leo Sayer had a single with almost exactly that song title; the B-side was a punk rock version of "Short'nin' Bread" played on the kalimba.
Feels like a beautiful connection between this and "Ripple." Thanks for this combination.
Well said ronbellaz...

Rightous ?
Consistently high energy and without pretense.

Yes! Amen!
8 simple words that speak volumes.

Well there's also the idea that they write a lot of songs that seem to be talking to their own youthful selves from years past.
Anyway here's the best Grammys performance in a long time/ever: Mumford & Sons, Avett Brothers and a guy called Bob.
That was so cool (the Grammy performance).
Edit: Once again, I need to read these threads as I now see there was a previous discussion about this simple bit of wisdom.
Not if you want to be, ooh I dunno, a brain surgeon or a nuclear engineer or research physicist. I hate trite aphorisms like this, mainly because the corollary is that, if your life is sh1te, it's your fault entirely. The lyric works in the context of the song, which is a fine song, but it's not a life lesson.
There isn't a brain surgeon or nuclear physicist out there who didn't have to make the decision to become what they became — in fact, I would argue that in cases where above-average effort is required, the positive decision to be something and the requisite follow-through are all the more crucial. The line in the song isn't guaranteeing or even promising success — it's saying that the first step to getting where you want to go is committing to the journey.
And ain't nuthin wrong with that.

So am I, actually came here to post this. It's funny how I always think it's fading into that awesome song, but then it just keeps on playing. And I'm disappointed. :D

And I agree. It's too easy to say "You're damn wrong, get things right", but you're not a guru just by saying that.
However, these guys do have nice lyrics.
Cheers!

Ditto, pretentious and irritating.
Pretentious? Anything but!
x2. It's on the Austin City Limits website for those that missed.
