A seven nation army couldn't hold me back
They're gonna rip it off
Taking their time right behind my back
And I'm talking to myself at night
because I can't forget
Back and forth through my mind
behind a cigarette
And the message coming from my eyes
it says leave it alone
Don't want to hear about it
every single one's got a story to tell
Everyone knows about it from the Queen of England
to the hounds of hell
And if I catch it coming back my way
I'm gonna serve it to you
And that ain't what you want to hear,
but that's what I'll do
And the feeling coming from my bones
it says find a home
I'm going to Wichita
Far from this opera forever more
I'm gonna work the straw,
make the sweat drip out of every pore
And I'm pleading, and I'm pleading,
and I'm pleading right before the Lord
All the words are gonna bleed from me
and I will think no more
And the stains coming from my blood
tell me go back home
All bios of this group should note the HUGE popularity of this tune's opening riff among sports fans. And it is not just soccer fans--I have heard the chant at other US sporting events!
And the SKALD cover is just as good!
You gotta being kidding me! Jack White is a mediocre guitar player at best. Does not come close to Page, Beck, Clapton.
Look, there is a HUGE void of young (under 50 years old) RnR guitar players. Any average young player that stumbles into that void, gets anointed by people under 50. Sames applies to the guy with the Foo Fighters.
So you all please quit anointing these average guitar players. They are not that good. Geeeeeeeez.

Although it sounds like a bass guitar (an instrument the group had never previously used), the sound is actually created by running Jack White's semi-acoustic, 1950s-style Kay Hollowbody guitar through a DigiTech Whammy pedal set down an octave.
Not quite an illusion, just some electronic FX to make Jack's guitar sound like a bass, and that's why you hear a bass line.
It doesn't actually sound like a bass guitar. Bass strings are so heavy and thick, they don't vibrate as freely as guitar strings and damp themselves quickly. Compare super-slinky guitar strings against thicker metal acoustic guitar strings.
You can hear the "melodic" sustained vibration of the guitar strings very clearly during the latter part of this song.
Dear Mr. Wind.
I'm now the ripe old age of 51 so I think I can speak to this: You're wrong. There are still plenty of guitar players who, if they had been around between 1966 and 1978, would have been considered "gods". For example:
-Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine & tours with Bruce Springsteen)
-Jason Isbell (Solo and Drive By Truckers)
-Gary Clark Jr.
-Derek Trucks (Solo, with Amanda Shires and with Allman Brothers)
-Christone "Kingfish" Ingram
-Joe Bonamassa
Unfortunately, your argument is basically the same one we've been hearing from older generations since the beginning of time: "the music was better in my day!". I think that the truth is that guitar-based-rock is not a dominant force in popular music anymore so today's "great" guitar players are just not showcased in the same way they were in "our" day. You have to go look for them and RP does a great job of helping us old people find them.
I didn't truly believe the White Stripes only had two members until I saw them perform live in 2004. While Meg played the drums and sang 1 song (Meg is awesome by the way!) Jack ripped with his guitar while also playing the organ and singing. I wouldn't believe one person could do all that if I hadn't seen it myself. If that isn't being a talent, I don't know what is.

Have a pity! This song is the anthem af all the narrowminded supporter from all Europe. I can't stand it anymore this, lalalalala la la... I thought I was safe on Radioparadise, where the damn! must i go?

Sure this is not WS's fault, do you realize this simple concept?

I think Jack knows where the Crossroads is.
I watched it and thanks for the tip. Wow, just amazing how good they were.

He is telling it here by himself. (Next to him sit Jimmy Page and the Edge.)

Thanks for the share, and I think it's pretty cool how he used the FX to "make" a new instrument....I'm a fan...call it an 8 (though the Ben L'oncle version of this tune is a 9 to me) - Long Live RP and musical creativity!!
Morphine did in a song which the title escapes me at this time.
Maybe you're thinking of True Dreams of Wichita by Soul Coughing. They're both downbeat, low register vocalists.

I truly believe what you a saying is a closed minded statement! while guitar playing is important the over all style of the song is important as well. this song for example is not about guitar, it's about the drive of the song. If Jack White were to break out in some kind of Page like guitar solo it would not fit in this song. Not all music has to have the long drawn out over played guitar riffs ,Which at times quite frankly annoys me. Perhaps new music now a days isn't as guitar driven as it use to be. You truly are closing yourself off to some wonderful music!!
So this is where they got it from! Used in a few football chants over here in UK too.
I have to go to Wichita next week for work. Not my favorite place. Looking forward to some good BBQ though. At least better than you can get here in the Great White North.
Every time I do go to Wichita this song gets stuck in my head on the plane ride down, whether I heard it recently or not. "Going to Wichita..." Why yes, yes I am going to Wichita.
I too grew up in Wichita....great place to grow up and leave! "Jack Straw" another good shout out to Wichita!

Watch "It Might Get Loud" and then re-consider.
That's the funniest thing I've read today. (I hope he wasn't serious....)
Ummm...this is AC/DC...right?

My favorite tune is Hot Women (Cold Beer):
I love hot hot women
And I love cold beer
I like hot hot women and cold cold beer
I love red hot women and ice cold beer
Yeeoh!
Gotta love a song with lyrics like that!
Idiotwind, do you have 2 accounts?
that was fun,
but did Jack get royalties?

With him, it's about tonality and attitude. True he doesn't do Satriani-like fluid runs, but he's actually Eno-like in his thoughts about style/sound/structure.
Even to the point of the color scheme of the band: red, white, black. Three things are more stable, like a stool. Vocals, guitar, drums: three things.
He's someone that's more thoughtful than your average guitar god.
yep,
and an 8 from me

You should watch "It Might Get Loud." Jack White holds his own on there with Jimmy Page. They also had the Edge on there, but you can ignore that part.
Thanks. Great documentary indeed. Here is the youtube link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNqu4_pG44M

You are not the Voice Of The Authority That Decides What Is Good Rock And Roll. You have an opinion. That's all. Get over yourself.
Second that, dwhayslett. His is a viewpoint which suggests RnR was BEST in MY generation and anyone new or young cannot even come close. Really? I guess he shares Homer Simpsons belief..."why do we need new bands, rock n roll attained perfection in 1974!"
A good tune nonetheless

You might be thinking about "It Might Get Loud" (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1229360/), a documentary movie with Jimmy Page (awesome!), Jack White (awesome!) and The Edge (meh). Very cool movie.
Honestly, how did Edge ever get onto that documentary? Should have called it, " Two FREAKING guitar gods and that guy from U2."
You just made Jimmy Webb's eyes well up with pride!
You must have been giddy about this -
The riff gets played to death by a wide range of recorded instruments and voices at sports arenas and stadia all over the United States.
That is absolutely no justification for giving a low rating to the original and wonderous version of this rock and roll classic.

11 years later, this song seems to be getting bigger, if that's possible:

...so that must mean, you dig "Jack Straw" by the Grateful Dead?
as the verse goes:
Jack Straw from Wichita cut his buddy down,
And dug for him a shallow grave and laid his body down.
Half a mile from Tucson, by the morning light,
One man gone and another to go, my old buddy you're moving much too slow.
Yeah. that line always makes me smile
hi·lar·i·ous
Great song
What we have today (Jack W, Foo Fighters, Kid Rock, Linkin Park) ain't no comparison to Led, Stones, Dylan, Allman, EC, Little Feat, Pink Floyd, Dead, Yes, Who, Spingsteen, etc, etc, etc.
R n R is dead.
music is like wine, keep drinking while let some bottles to get older...or maybe we listen to different radio stations :) Cheers !
C'mon man, it's Seven Nation Army not any song !

When performing on the Grammys to support this album, Jack launched into a jaw-dropping 2 to 3 minute solo that I describe to friends to this day.
8->9 for the riff, the memories, and the beer.
I remember it being popularized at Euro 2008...
AC/DC wishes they were this good
Love me some White Stripes , crucify me, not down w/ this one
This is AC/DC...right?

That would be Grammy Award winning "kazoo playing." Sounds like someone doesn't appreciate Jack White's underlying riff on his Kay Hollowbody guitar run through a Digitech Whammy pedal set down an octave. Me? I dig it.
