Yes, please, please bring Carplay back. It is no good idea to fiddle around on the phone while driving. Illegal also in Germany.

William, with all due respect, adding "useful & interesting things to come" while losing a basic function that is obviously something that is missed by a lot of your listeners doesn't seem to me to be all that good a trade.

VLC on iOS supports CarPlay. VLC is an all purpose media player
You can save your RP stream links into VLC, and start them from CarPlay without accessing your phone
To do this:
on the RP website, go to Listen —> Stream links. Find and copy the stream link you'd like to hear. You'll paste them into VLC one by one
one-time setup in the VLC app — Browse —> Open Network Stream, paste your RP stream URLs one by one, renaming them to suit your titling needs. These links are now saved in VLC and available in CarPlay
in CarPlay, your saved stream links are in the Network tab
these are live streams, so you lose some things: you can't skip forward, you can't reliably pause and then pick up where you left off, no art, etc.
but this is what RP has always been and still is: first order of business is playing Bill's curated music choices, voila
VLC is a little wonky and technical but hey it's CarPlay, so there you go

Why does the old app have to die? Call it RadioParadiseLite and leave out the rest of the pending very useful and interesting things. The old app was very small and simple - wasnât it? I seemed to recall it was only like 3 MB. 1/15 of the new app. Or maybe Iâm wrong. But I thought that was one of the things I liked about it. Its simplicity.
Probably not a viable idea. But I saw elsewhere this was only a 2% rollout. So youâre only getting 2% of the heat I guess.
I do not contribute. But have been seriously considering I should. I have been listening for too long without doing so.
I used to love the iTunes integration. So I could add songs to my library. Thatâs gone. With your naked disdain for Apple, it does not sound like a means of doing anything with a link to Apple Music is in the cards.
I used to have a workaround. When clicking the âshareâ button it would create a message with the song title, artist, and link to RP for the same. I made a macro that would scrape that info out of the message, look it up in iTunes, and add it to my âGreat New RP Tunesâ playlist. Now the share is just a generic link to RP.
Now CarPlay is gone. I was on the fence. And should be contributing. I know I should. All of this does not help with that.
Good luck in patching this up and Iâm sorry to hear of the overruns.

A reasonable estimate. So far, we're running at about 2.5x the high end of the reasonable estimates we started with for everything else. So if we started with a $7000 estimate, that'd put us in the same neighborhood as the numbers I pull out my butt earlier.
We'll keep listening on this, and are open to changing our minds. That definitely won't be happening during next week's bugfix & we'll continue the rollout after that. But come January, if this is genuinely having a significant negative impact, we'll find a way to make it happen.
Please bring it back. Please.

Thatâs good to hear William and Iâd like to say thank youâ¦I was worried, from your earlier posts, your mind was made up and your foot was down..!
I note a few 1 Star ratings on the App Store already, but what your criteria for impact is I guess is naturally your callâ¦

The CarPlay issue aside, it seems it may have been better to have waited a little longer re the new App..? Lots of talk of âthings to come/be addedâ and a large bugfix etcâ¦.Seems Iâm now lumbered with a fairly handicapped Appâ¦.
Indeed, sounds like the rollout has been paused, so serious enoughâ¦.Why was the trigger pulled prematurely..?
A couple of things only revealed themselves after the launch, and a quick pause for significant issues was always part of the plan.
My ignorance about CarPlay was a great example of me having no clue about how clueless I was.

We won't be doing a separate CarPlay app â but our app is still quite compatible with CarPlay. The display shows all of the same info & images, you can skip, or pause songs, all the important stuff.
The difference is that you can't start RP from an icon on the CarPlay screen. After you're connected to CarPlay (which is usually automatic) you need to open our app on your phone and start playing. From there, it operates exactly like you're used to. Except for changing channels, which also requires your phone.
Is that less convenient than the old way? Yes.
Does it save us $20k-$50k in development costs? Also yes.
It would be one thing if we spent that on an app to connect ALL car systems to RP, but the trend is kinda the opposite, as several auto manufacturers have recently dropped CarPlay entirely. That makes us even less inclined to pay for pricey digs inside the walled garden down in Cupertino.
The thing I most regret is that â since I never use CarPlay & am not familiar with how it works â I assumed that the difference in how one uses a "CarPlay app" (our existing app) and a "CarPlay-compatible app" (our new app) would be trivial & self-explanatory. Not the case at all.
We'll be adding a sure-fire can't-miss transition guide before we go any further. The app rollout is currently at 2%, so 98% of you still have the old version. We won't resume the rollout until we release a pretty substantial bugfix next week.

If RP is not an officially CarPlay supported app, Iâm out. My phone doesnât get service in my garage (wifi or cellular), so I canât do anything till Iâm on the road. This means that now I have to pull out my phone to start the RP app while Iâm driving, which is illegal in Washington state, as well as many other states.

For those of us still on the old version, will we be forced to take the upgrade or can we continue using the prior version (I would assume without support)?

William, I am sensitive to your concerns about added costs. But Apple CarPlay is an absolutely essential functionality for many people, and I count myself in that number. This was one of the worst things you could do as far as I am concerned, please don't ever think about abandoning Roon support! That would be the only thing I could imagine would be worse than losing CarPlay support.
I hope you will reconsider and and bring it back soon. I am currently forced to listen to Soma FM...
