I've been to a few since I went to college in Baton Rouge and grad school in New Orleans, but mostly didn't care. When you live there, it's just flat impossible to get around town due to the tourists and various parade routes.

Until that one year in the mid 80s when I was moving from one apartment to another and got caught waiting at a sidewalk as the parade came through.

What a great time that was, really. No expectations, no drinking. Just silliness and "Throw me something" and a big old smile.
Mardi Gras is a family affair for the most part but, like Cinco Di Mayo, got commercialized into a drunken vulgar obscenity. Shame.

But in some places it's still fun and cool. Here's a pic of some relatives of mine having a great time this year. Maybe heading to Rex, the big kahuna of parades.

My one and only Mardi Gras memorable experience (everybody should go once.  Twice, why bother?) was watching a cop indifferently watching a drunk until he pulled the tab on another beer and when it sprayed a couple of bystanders just a bit, the cop nonchalantly beat the shit out of the drunk and just left him crawling on the ground in misery.  MG what a treat!  NOLA, yeah, man.

One of those music posts down there says "Cajun Creole."

No. Such. Thing.

Cajun is an offshoot of Acadian, the term for the refugees from Acadia, in Canada. That's one group of folks that make up the area.

Creole is more African/French descent, but also is used to describe folks of African heritage born in Louisiana, particularly before it was purchased.

Sheesh.
